Because the indefatigable [personal profile] quickreaver herself illustrated something I wrote, without being tricked into it by a Big Bang or me having to sell my soul or nothin'. This is a dream come true, guys. I stole a tiny bit for a sneak peek but you need to go check out the real deal. It is fantastic!

Written for the Celebrating Sam event on [community profile] ohsam. The prompt was "field surgery." This was supposed to be from Sam’s POV, but Dean kept taking over (as he so often does when I try to write Sam), so you get both sides.

Pairings: None (gen)
Warnings: Language, whumpage
Also available on AO3

Side A

Like many of the stupid things Sam does, it happens too quickly for Dean to stop it. Once minute he's on his ass in the damp slippery grass, fallen like a goddamn amateur, watching the spinthaak advance and hoping he can get off a shot before it rips his head off. The next minute Sam's charging between him and the spinthaak, close enough (too close too close too goddamn close) to shoot it right between the eyes. Dean sees its tail twitch forward before it goes down and he rolls out of the way, because he knows what's at the end of a spinthaak's tail. He hopes to god that Sam got out of the way in time. But a strangled cry of pain puts his heart in his throat.

Sam's on his knees, pawing at his chest, and in a second Dean's in front of him. He tries to pull his brother's trembling hands away to check for blood, because a spinthaak has pretty big fucking claws, too. "Sam. Sam! Did it get you?"

"I'm okay. Kill it." Sam bats his hands away and waves toward the spinthaak's corpse. He clutches his chest again and sinks to the ground with a groan.

"It's dead," Dean says. "You got it. You got too close, you moron! Where did it get you? Did it sting you?"

Of course it did, of course it did, because nothing but a spinthaak's sting would put him in this much pain. Sam's curled up on the ground, writhing, whimpering, and Dean doesn't want to think about what it takes to make his brother fucking whimper.

(But he already knows. He's had John Winchester's voice murmuring in the back of his head all morning. Spinthaak venom. Just a tiny bit in each quill, but it's one of the most painful things a human being can ever experience. Knew a fella got stung in the finger, said he'd have shot his own arm off if his friend hadn't been there to stop him. But the pain isn't what takes you out. The venom is a paralytic. The quill burrows its way to your core if you can't yank it out fast enough, gets to your heart or your diaphragm and boom, you're gone. No antivenin, no CPR. Your only hope is to get that quill out before it's out of reach. And you'll be in too much pain to get it out yourself. That's why you never hunt a spinthaak alone.)

Anyone(s) available to beta (redacted)? And I'm serious about that plural... the more, the merrier. Though I can't use anyone who's arting for the 2016 [livejournal.com profile] spnhorrorbang since this is my submission for that. I feel okay about spelling and grammar; I'm mostly looking for logic, continuity, and for someone to help determine if this really is a horror story or just a series of extremely unfortunate events followed by a very dark ending. (Oh my god, so much to read, so far behind on LJ...)

I know it's late, but I'm updating my master list, so I've compiled my fills for the 2015 Oh Sam Triple Play. Please visit the community and read everyone else's fills too because they are SO GOOD.

Sometimes I think it's a sin, when I feel like I'm winning when I'm losing again
Length: About 2200 words
Rating: Gen, PG for language
Warnings: None
Characters: Bobby Singer, Sam Winchester. Not appearing in this story: Sam's soul.
Spoilers: Through S8

Synopsis: It's always bothered me that Bobby didn't tell Dean when Sam got out of Hell. Bothered me enough that I tried to fix it in my first published fic. So, here's Bobby's side of the story. And also maybe a teeny little bit of fix-it for Taxi Driver.

Fills the first person square on my Bingo card for [livejournal.com profile] spnspiration The title is from Sundown by Gordon Lightfoot, which you may recognize as the song on the radio at the beginning of Fan Fiction.

///

This ain't a story about heroic acts or love conquering all. It ain't a story of redemption, and it don't have much of a happy ending. It's a story about how a blind, foolish old man screwed up something big, even though he really should have known better, and hurt the only family he had left.

I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Length: About 8600 words
Rating: Gen, R for language and maybe other things
Warnings: Author chooses not to warn because she considers them spoilery; read at your own risk
Characters: Dean Winchester, Sam Winchester, Castiel
Spoilers: Through The Executioner's Song
Synopsis: Dean deals with the implications of Cain's prophecy. Fills the non-linearity square on my Bingo card for [livejournal.com profile] spnspiration

A/N: I started writing this after Dean killed Cain, and there was a lot we didn't know about the Mark. I decided not to post it back then because, as the charming and astute [livejournal.com profile] frozen_delight pointed out, everything I thought I knew about the Mark was wrong. ;-) And after the season finale I thought about reworking it to make it canon-compliant and decided I liked it better the way it was. So, consider this an AU. And forget everything you know about the Mark of Cain except for these things: it turns you into a demon if you're killed, it eventually turns you into a demon even if you're not killed, and it makes it difficult or impossible to kill you.

Thanks to my lovely betas [livejournal.com profile] manzanita_crow and [livejournal.com profile] frozen_delight. I messed with it after they read it, so all errors are mine. The title is from "Take Me To Church" by Hozier.

before

The thing is, Dean's been on this side of a prophecy before. He is, after all, the Righteous Man. The Michael Sword. He knows how useless it is to fight it. Sure, he can spout a lot of brave talk about Team Free Will, but he knows the truth: you try to buck destiny, and you find that instead of killing your brother, you're setting up the dominos that eventually knock him into the Pit as Lucifer's eternal meat suit, and how is that a win? One way or another, destiny has its way with you and there's not a single fucking thing you can do about it, at least in Dean's experience. So he knows what to expect here. And it takes several months, but Cain's prediction eventually comes to fruition, and Crowley is the first domino to fall.

I've been tagged by [livejournal.com profile] frozen_delight and [livejournal.com profile] steeplechasers to play the seven lines from the seventh page of your WIP meme. Shockingly, I actually have two WIPs that have a page seven, so here's one of them.

///

Sometimes the Mark whispers, sometimes it screams. Sometimes it speaks in voices stolen from those Dean respected and feared; from his father, from Death, because when they told him Sam had to die, he said yes, he promised it would be done, and they have not forgotten. Sometimes it speaks in Alastair's voice, dark and slippery, promising an end if he'll just say yes, if he'll just stop fighting. Sometimes it's the voice of Cain, soft and powerful, reminding him that there's not a damn thing he can do to alter the course he's on. Sometimes it sounds like the agonized cries of every soul he tortured in Hell. Sometimes it's not even a sound, it's just a vibration, deep in his very core.

Today it's the sound of his own heartbeat, quietly insinuating itself into Dean's subconscious as he stares at the ceiling above his bed, pulsing kill them, kill them.

And so now I'm going to tag:
[livejournal.com profile] indiachick (who I see now has already been tagged by someone else, but she hadn't been when I started writing this, so I'm leaving her here)
[livejournal.com profile] themegalosaurus (who needs to finish that [livejournal.com profile] ohsam prompt I'm dying to read)
[livejournal.com profile] agelade
[livejournal.com profile] duckondebut
[livejournal.com profile] madebyme_x
[livejournal.com profile] justmep2 (who I didn't wish a happy birthday because I suck :-/ )
[livejournal.com profile] sw0rdy

If you've already been tagged and I missed it, or you don't have anything to post, or don't feel like playing, feel free to ignore, or unfriend me, or tell me how much I suck, or grab your torch and pitchfork, or whatever you need to do.

This started as a challenge from the lovely [livejournal.com profile] kalliel to write tags for each episode of season 10. I decided to write a 100-word drabble for each episode in season 10 (plus a bonus prologue for the end of season 9.) And then I signed up for the [livejournal.com profile] spnspiration bingo challenge, and I ended up with pointillism ("a technique of painting in which small dots are applied in a pattern to form an image") on my bingo card. And I thought that square would forever remain open, given that I'm not actually a visual artist. But then I thought, huh. Drabbles. The small dots of fanfiction. Could a series of dotlike drabbles form an image of an entire season?

Let's find out!

Since I decided to try to make my drabbles paint a picture of the entire season, I've felt like I had to write about what really happened, instead of what I wanted to happen. But now I'm going to cheat, by posting a bonus drabble that isn't part of my pointillism challenge.
