It's Friday, and we don't have a new episode of Supernatural to talk about, so how about a couple of recs?

I don't post recs very often. I'm really, really bad at it, in fact. And when I do, I feel guilty, because there are dozens of great works I could be talking about right now. So I'm trying to do better.

First is All Your Lovers, which the amazing [livejournal.com profile] crowroad3 posted on my birthday (which still makes me hyperventilate a bit because I'm not worthy.) Like all of crowroad3's works, it's a gorgeous, lyrical, visionary-swirly-magical thing. And it's Trials!Sam, y'all. I could not possibly ask for more. None of us could.

And second is The Paper Asks Nothing, by [livejournal.com profile] ameliacareful (who doesn't seem to be updating her LJ any longer, so this is on AO3). This is about as different from Crowroad3's story as you can get. I'm trying to think of how to describe it and I keep coming up with words like spare and calm, which don't sound right and also don't sound flattering. The thing is, she has written some absolute gut-churning horror with a quiet, pared-down style which just makes it that much more horrifying.

And finally, how about some absolutely fantastic smut (not just smut but also sweetness and angst and yes there is smut-aplenty) by [livejournal.com profile] z_publicizes featuring Sam and a human version of the Impala?

If one of these fics doesn't make your day, I don't know what will.

Woo hoo!

Yesterday, [livejournal.com profile] themegalosaurus alerted me to this little bit of fluff on Tumblr...

Did I say fluff? I mean life-changing moment. In case you missed it:

That's right, friends. I have been on E! News. The lovely [livejournal.com profile] crowroad3 and I were the focus of a groundbreaking story about the esteemed literary genre of Supernatural fanfiction. (You'll notice we both declined interview requests... we're very private people.)

What happens next, you ask? Well, obviously, the Supernatural cast, writers, and show runners are going to watch this important news item and will be intrigued enough to scour the internet until they find that very fic.(And no, that wasn't a random screenshot grabbed by an intern who was told to get a visual of fanfic. Obviously a producer picked out that shot and that fic for very particular reasons.) When they read it, they'll feel compelled to read everything I've written - fic, reviews, meta, and other nonsense - and they'll say hey, this caranfindel person has some amazing insight, she knows what we're doing wrong and what we should be doing instead; we need her on our team. I'll then become a writer (head writer, perhaps, but probably not in my first year) and when that happens, you know what's coming next. That's right, guys. A season on a boat. It's coming. I can feel it. Everything is falling into place. (For me, anyway. Crowroad is a poet, and therefore will probably feel compelled to withdraw from society and move to her own personal Walden Pond. Such is the life of the tortured artist.)

(Seriously, how funny is this? First, I don't even know what LJ community that screenshot is from - I don't recognize it at all. And it shows on the screen when they're talking about FF.net and don't even mention LJ. Second, the theory that fans wrote Wincest because there were no other relationships in the first two seasons of the show? Ha ha ha ha ha no. And what did they call us? Supernatties or something like that? Please don't.)

I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Length: About 8600 words
Rating: Gen, R for language and maybe other things
Warnings: Author chooses not to warn because she considers them spoilery; read at your own risk
Characters: Dean Winchester, Sam Winchester, Castiel
Spoilers: Through The Executioner's Song
Synopsis: Dean deals with the implications of Cain's prophecy. Fills the non-linearity square on my Bingo card for [livejournal.com profile] spnspiration

A/N: I started writing this after Dean killed Cain, and there was a lot we didn't know about the Mark. I decided not to post it back then because, as the charming and astute [livejournal.com profile] frozen_delight pointed out, everything I thought I knew about the Mark was wrong. ;-) And after the season finale I thought about reworking it to make it canon-compliant and decided I liked it better the way it was. So, consider this an AU. And forget everything you know about the Mark of Cain except for these things: it turns you into a demon if you're killed, it eventually turns you into a demon even if you're not killed, and it makes it difficult or impossible to kill you.

Thanks to my lovely betas [livejournal.com profile] manzanita_crow and [livejournal.com profile] frozen_delight. I messed with it after they read it, so all errors are mine. The title is from "Take Me To Church" by Hozier.

The thing is, Dean's been on this side of a prophecy before. He is, after all, the Righteous Man. The Michael Sword. He knows how useless it is to fight it. Sure, he can spout a lot of brave talk about Team Free Will, but he knows the truth: you try to buck destiny, and you find that instead of killing your brother, you're setting up the dominos that eventually knock him into the Pit as Lucifer's eternal meat suit, and how is that a win? One way or another, destiny has its way with you and there's not a single fucking thing you can do about it, at least in Dean's experience. So he knows what to expect here. And it takes several months, but Cain's prediction eventually comes to fruition, and Crowley is the first domino to fall.

I've been tagged by [livejournal.com profile] frozen_delight and [livejournal.com profile] steeplechasers to play the seven lines from the seventh page of your WIP meme. Shockingly, I actually have two WIPs that have a page seven, so here's one of them.

Sometimes the Mark whispers, sometimes it screams. Sometimes it speaks in voices stolen from those Dean respected and feared; from his father, from Death, because when they told him Sam had to die, he said yes, he promised it would be done, and they have not forgotten. Sometimes it speaks in Alastair's voice, dark and slippery, promising an end if he'll just say yes, if he'll just stop fighting. Sometimes it's the voice of Cain, soft and powerful, reminding him that there's not a damn thing he can do to alter the course he's on. Sometimes it sounds like the agonized cries of every soul he tortured in Hell. Sometimes it's not even a sound, it's just a vibration, deep in his very core.

Today it's the sound of his own heartbeat, quietly insinuating itself into Dean's subconscious as he stares at the ceiling above his bed, pulsing kill them, kill them.

And so now I'm going to tag:
[livejournal.com profile] indiachick (who I see now has already been tagged by someone else, but she hadn't been when I started writing this, so I'm leaving her here)
[livejournal.com profile] themegalosaurus (who needs to finish that [livejournal.com profile] ohsam prompt I'm dying to read)
[livejournal.com profile] agelade
[livejournal.com profile] duckondebut
[livejournal.com profile] madebyme_x
[livejournal.com profile] justmep2 (who I didn't wish a happy birthday because I suck :-/ )
[livejournal.com profile] sw0rdy

If you've already been tagged and I missed it, or you don't have anything to post, or don't feel like playing, feel free to ignore, or unfriend me, or tell me how much I suck, or grab your torch and pitchfork, or whatever you need to do.

Do it!

I'm ridiculously excited about my prompt, though embarrassed at my blundering attempts to get it.

I'm working on a fic and I'm having problems reconciling some of Lilith's motivation. Here's what I know about her:

  1. She's the new sheriff in town, apparently replacing Azazel.

  2. She wants Sam gone. Presumably she wants him dead, since she tried to kill him after the hellhounds came for Dean.

  3. She wanted Dean in Hell so he would break the first seal.

  4. She's working with Ruby to trick Sam into breaking the last seal so Lucifer will rise.

But 2 doesn't make sense. If Lilith is Lucifer's minion, why would she want to destroy his vessel? What am I missing?
