The whole ep was such a throwback to early seasons in tone and everything, so pleasing!
Pretty sure Dean wasn't going to kill the supposed witch without some proof; I think he was planning on goading her into going after him before he pulled the trigger. (That being said, I rather loved Sam's little sigh when Dean says he's going to kill her earlier, like, 'killing a possibly innocent person is such a drag, you're so uncouth, Dean...')
And I was assuming Dean would pass on Mary's message a little later, when he didn't actually have the phone in hand so he had an excuse not to show it to Sam and be embarrassed by his own very sweet text. Also Dean kind of had to say it was nothing because otherwise it would lead to more conversation and they needed to close out the episode but yeah...wish I didn't have to assume, hopefully in the next eps it will make it clear they do talk about it?
