I look at Carrie as a lesson in what NOT to do. It's as much of a morality tale for "mean girls" as Friday the 13th is for pre-marital sex. There are educational aspects: some girls get their period sooner, some get it later, and some aren't told anything about it. Also, it the VERY IMPORTANT point that making fun of someone having their period is NOT NICE -- and potentially deadly, what with those darned mood swings and that pesky telekinesis.
