Jared and Jensen (bless their really attractive hearts) really acted their cute butts off in this episode, with what they were given.
My own opinion is, that there is less Sam this Season because the PTB keep giving his scenes and lines as written, to the other characters so they have something to do. I have been noticing that, as you say, a lot of Sam scenes are off camera, but the ending with Sam totally a blur, is the first time i have noticed that dhe hasn't been at least a little in focus. Since the end of S12, often when it is scenes of Sam, Dean and Cas, we only see Dean and Cas talking to each other, which must be a showrunner choice, to give the DeanCas fans a tiny tidbit. I honestly don't mind a few Dean and Cas scenes, but don't make it look like Sam isn't there, when he is..
