I kind of think that Millygal's idea re the Mark making Dean into a Knight of Hell was practically explicit in the ep when they met Cain??
But the part that didn't jump out at me earlier is that Crowley is behind it and has been all along.
As for the souls, I think the Mark might be suppressing his soul. Not turning it.
