Part of me appreciates the fact that they're revisiting this issue, and part of me wishes that they'd just have left it. While I don't feel that the apology was necessary, I think I can maybe see why Sam would feel guilty about it, he has a history with feeling that he has let Dean down, so seeing him get some resolution was good, at least he can move on from it.
