The most unbelievable part of this episode was that a small nunnery in Malta was supposed to have the skull of St Peter at all, let alone unguarded. And they only went to the village for money to buy it back? I rather think the Pope would have had a teeny-tiny interest in the skull of the founder of the Catholic Church!
I think we're supposed to assume they took up a collection - and there were some tourists in the congregation. One of them was Australian. I saw an Aussie $100 bill there. That's what really doesn't make sense. Aussie tourists aren't that generous.
A Maltese Falcon reference that I think hasn't been mentioned yet: Sydney Greenstreet was an actor in the Bogart Maltese Falcon. His character was called the Fat Man and the Greenstreet in this episode was definitely referring to him. So there was that blatant reference. I don't think there was as clear cut a Peter Lorre parallel.
I'm not sure what went wrong for me in this episode exactly. Pacing, maybe? Or that I just watched an old episode of Charmed where a couple of boys wrote a rip-off of the Maltese Falcon that sucked people into the story? Maybe I'm over the whole Maltese Falcon thing.
This is three episodes in a row for me that I haven't rewatched. And I always rewatch the episodes, especially before the next one comes on. It makes me sad. We were doing so well in the season. At least we did get to see Sam and Dean being Sam and Dean. Much hope for a good Scooby-Doo crossover.
The things that annoyed me slightly - because I really liked this episode - was that they went to Greenstreet empty-handed when the Bunker is full of Supernatural treasures. They could've taken something to trade. And why didn't they ask to see the blood of St Ignatius rather than just taking Greenstreet's word that he had it? But if those things had happened it would've been a very short episode, hee hee!
