I don't think he was searching for days, but I think it's fair to say that he'd probably been searching a while, rather than just finding him right off the bat.
What I want to know is exactly how the Darkness "saved" Dean when Sam wasn't hurt inside the car, so Dean probably wouldn't have been either. Unless she saved him from the repercussions of killing Death...? But nah, it smacks of lies to me.
