New-writer had to bone up on eleven years of past canon and 'Sam has psychic-powers and a lot of angst about that' was the thing he seems to have considered most worthy of referencing. Also, he did an episode in which Sam and Dean split and we follow Sam's story and he bonds with a secondary character, and how long has it been since we've seen that?
New-writer can stay.
I liked the return to heartland American Gothic with attendant beautiful dark visuals. Sam recognizing Aramaic on the fly. The Magda actress being so good. Parallels between Winchesters and the religiously deranged Apple Pie family. Sam and Dean bantering over Vince's music.

Yes! I mentioned this in my recap but forgot to put it in the poll. This is huge.
I thought it was a very pretty episode, and really atmospheric. I loved the old-school look of it, particularly. Some of it really left me going, 'bzuh?', though. Like, what kind of social worker thinks it's a good idea to put a traumatized kid who's just been locked in a basement for years and watched her family die horribly on a bus alone and just hope for the best? And why did Sam and Dean just assume she'd now be fine even though nobody had actually taught her how to control her powers? All seemed very irresponsible to me!
Hmm. You have some good points. I think the putting Magda on the bus thing had to be a plotpoint of convenience, so that the mysterious Mr. Ketch could cack her. But regarding her powers, I'm not sure even SAM knows how she can control them! He hasn't had a serious psychic episode since Season Five, and the "visions" he thought he was having from God turned out to be Lucifer, so I'm not sure he really counts those as anything. Pamela's dead, Missouri is who-knows-where... *shrug!*
The social worker, I understand. When a kid hits 18, they no longer qualify for children's services. There are actual cases where kids have been kicked out of their foster homes on their 18th birthday, even if they have no way to take care of themselves. Magda looked like she was older than 18. The department was keeping tabs on the family because the brother was still under 18, I think. Anyway, they found her a place to go, got her on her way and then went back to the bazillion other cases they had.
Why Sam and Dean didn't take her? I think they figured they had turned her over to child services and that was all they would do.
Huh, I figured she was meant to be about 16. Maybe they specified and I missed it.
I'm not suggesting that Sam and Dean should've taken her back to the bunker -- that would be a terrible place for a kid! -- but it would've been nice if there had been a line written in with them saying, "Here's the number for Missouri/Oliver Pryce, they'll be able to give you some advice."
The father said they'd moved to the farm five years ago and the mother indicated she'd been in the accident a fair while before they moved, enough time for her to get addicted to pain killers, so I guessed 2? It's hard for me to imagine a child much younger than 11 demanding a new cell phone, although maybe I'm old and out of touch. I also was going on the fact that if Magda had been under 18, child services would have been negligent to put her on a bus without supervision, so I was thinking she was 18, maybe just turned 18, but technically of age.
The flogging really really grossed me out in a way that no other Supernatural gore has; I couldn't totally love this episode for that. Also I agree with Anactoria about putting traumatized people on buses, but that seems to be a running theme in the show-- Emily from Scarecrow, Charlie, Cas, Claire... This show doesn't do aftercare.
Having said all that, imagine that, a Supernatural writer who actually acknowledges S1-5!!! For that alone I'm in favor.
I loooooved this episode. It felt like classic SPN but with some small new twists. I adore it when it gets gory, and the stigmata and flogging was SO up my alley. I loved Dean texting Mary (and her subsequent reply), I loved that we followed Sam's POV for a good chunk of the story (we get that so seldom), the banter felt like THEM, the directing was gorgeously shot (there were so many beautiful longer shots that showcased how tall and pretty our boys are)...
Yeah, I know this is Davy Perez's first forray, but so far, this was my favorite episode.
Oh, also, the title was a nod to Davy's first series he wrote on: American Criminal. Per Perez himself! :) (But I thought it smacked of American Gothic too...)

Dean wanting to kill the witch with no real proof and the phone being on and Sam being caught bugged me but I hand waved it all because so much other love for this episode! :)

So much this! When my spouse has to leave the room because of the gore, I know it's good gore! I would have said I loved the episode but the British MOL stuff at the end spoiled it for me. Because I thought, "oh, crap, I don't care about this storyline". I was really hoping Magda would turn up later this season. Mr. Ketch brought on my narcolepsy. OOOOoo, scary! Not. I'm afraid it just means more torture porn later in the season.
Winchesters in sweaters! Did you notice that Sam was wearing a nondescript maroon sweater and Dean was wearing a snazzy heavy sweater that was cut to show off his body? Especially from the back (saw a production photo)? Dean didn't get that from no thriftshop.
I loved loved loved it!!! But I did have a word with Sam about walking around with a super bright flashlight in a place with no electricity which would have been like a beacon screaming out 'someones on your property'!!!!
re: 'they were really considering killing magda?' << I also took this POV but have run into a couple of people this week who seem to think they were negligent not to!! !!!!!!
unsurprisingly I loved this whole episode, so much Sam, ref to psychic!Sam (that line about 'I don't think...' just please let Sam go back home and try out his powers come ON buddy you can do it), sweaterchesters (hot professor Sam), priestchesters (Sam so LONG AN DTALL in his coat oh lawd), angry!Sam, angry at GOD Sam << more than we got in the whole back half of S11, thank you Davy Perez you're my new hero oKAY

Yeah, I get that it was there to facilitate the wider plot; it just made me think, "Wait, why did nobody think this was a bad idea?!"

My head canon is that he did, off camera, but was too embarrassed to right after the conversation he and Sam had just had.
> Was Dean actually going to kill Beth when he snuck into her office at night?
Yes because, while Dabb seems to have a better handle on character, emotion and continuity than Carver did, he has a really poor moral compass.
> Why are their coffee cups always obviously empty?
This is also true of the Gilmore Girls and they drink a LOT of coffee! O_O
