The poll so far: The front half of season 15

Well, friends, it's a new year. Is getting back to the episode polls one of my resolutions? Perhaps. Is it doomed to fail? Likely. But how about a poll on the front half of season 15?

[Poll #2098024]

Remember, no spoilers in the comments, please!

> Dean's well-established canonical inability to sing

This isn't well-established canon, merely well established fandom myth. Fandom is apparently unable to judge whether a person is on pitch when there's no backing track. #whatswrongwiththis?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ZOEfYvA7Fw

> How do we feel about Cas and Dean's wee tiff?

I'm mortally afraid it's setting up future Destiel fan service : /

I've missed your episode polls! I found the first three episodes disappointing, but once it moved on from the dreary little town things improved. I think the saddest loss was Benny, as he wasn't back for more than a few minutes and only in a vision, not with Dean. But perhaps they'll reunite in purgatory!

I've generally liked this season. The second episode was a bit slow, but I've been happy all in all, maybe I'm just easy.

I don't think Sam and Eileen have consummated the relationship, at least not since she's been back. All of his reactions say to me that he's not thinking about having sex with her. I'm 50/50 as to whether they actually will "do the deed" . I can see Sam not wanting that kind of connection. I can see the show wanting to kill Eileen off and giving her a Sam as a sendoff present. I can also see the idea that the writers are going to go with Jared's stated favorite ending and kill off Sam and Dean at the end and Eileen will be pregnant with someone to carry on the Winchester/Campbell line. They could also be planning on giving Sam a happy ending and have this be the start of giving him a life to settle into.

I don't know about Jess coming back. They have name checked her, so I'm guessing they would LIKE to have her back, but I don't know what Adrianne Palecki's schedule looks like and where The Orville is in their filming schedule. Bringing her back would be a nice callback, but I suspect some of that is based on things out of the writers' control.

I always thought that if Chuck was God then God was, if not a direct villain, then he was an antagonist. Much of the goodwill I had toward Chuck was as a poor shmuck getting stuck with visions and a need to write them down. In that case he was a brave soul doing the best he could to help stop the Apocalypse. As God, he could have stopped it at any time. He also didn't have to leave Sam and Adam in the Cage once the story was over, but he was willing for Sam to be tortured for all eternity, so yeah, basic antagonist. I had no problem with a God who was the "prime mover", who got the world going said "have at it" and then let us do what we wanted. But to come back, become actively involved and still do nothing is a villain move. As a series ender, God is not a bad choice for final villain.

I too fear that Destiel fan service awaits. I hope not, because that would really sour me on the series. I could almost take Cass admitting to UNREQUITED feelings for Dean, but anything other than that would make me really mad. Just say NO to Destiel.

I hope this posts in the right spot this time.

Your polls are always the best of the best!!

I keep getting tripped up by the lack of continuity. The whole "you've been to hell so you can't go to heaven" is such BULLSHIT. John came out of hell and went to heaven! It's such an arbitrary rule, made up to ratchet up the stakes. I like Sam and Eileen but I worry they're going to stick to the fuck-Sam-and-die canon.

There's some things I've enjoyed about this season but more that I haven't. I really hate God being the Big Bad. It was so powerful in earlier seasons when God wasn't there and didn't care. Now I feel boned, like all of the apocalypse plot was robbed of its meaning. Seriously, screw Chuck.

This one doesn't bother me. Back in Dark Side of the Moon, Joshua flat out said he didn't understand why God kept letting Sam and Dean into Heaven when they died, although it was pretty obvious he really meant Sam. So it was hinted that God was making those calls and really the only ones who went to Heaven after being in Hell were John (special dispensation meant to reward Sam and Dean and give them a reason to keep fighting) and Bobby, who was kidnapped and deliberately sent to the wrong place and was allowed in before the fall of the angels depleted first locked up Heaven and then depleted the ranks of angels keeping it going. By now, there is barely enough angel power to keep those who belong in Heaven there, let alone work to make exceptions to the already established rules. It is a retcon, but it's not an egregious retcon, unlike say Reapers are angels or Reapers can only be killed by a special ritual using the proper scythe, oops, now than can be killed by angel blades or Rowena on a mission, for example.

They have been saying NO to Destiel, but now it's the last season and they don't have to worry about keeping the Republican sponsors happy anymore : /

[identity profile] percysowner.livejournal.com 2020-01-06 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
I'm counting on wanting to keep Jensen happy. He has born the brunt of the demands for Destiel and the brunt of being called homophobic because he keeps saying Dean is straight. I'm hoping that he keeps resisting the demands, but I do worry that he will be overruled.

We . . . ell . . . he did say he wasn't happy about the ending . . . but, hopefully, that was about something else O_O

[identity profile] percysowner.livejournal.com 2020-01-06 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
I'm hoping it's about something else, anything else. I also know he said he talked to Eric Kripke and Kripke talked him around to the ending. I don't think Kripke was into Destiel. I don't think Destiel actually took over fandom until after season 5 at least not with the insane (IMHO) passion that it has grown into. But I will live in dread that I am wrong and that they are going to cave to a small segment of fans. I hope not. I already hate How I Met Your Mother for their ending and I want to feel good about loving Supernatural for all these years.

I still love the first 5 seasons, and I give 6 a pass. I deal with the rest by considering it uncanonical: just professional fanfiction of varying qualities. For me, that preserves the genius of the original canon in tact.

[identity profile] galatera-grass.livejournal.com 2020-01-06 08:27 am (UTC)(link)
I counted in the final season that there would be more brothers ((

[identity profile] caranfindel.livejournal.com 2020-01-06 06:07 pm (UTC)(link)
If the Dean & Cas make up sex option doesn't make it obvious, I should point out that my poll options are often based on what I see people talking about on LJ/Tumblr, and not my own personal opinion. I've always thought Dean's bad singing as a demon was done intentionally.

[identity profile] caranfindel.livejournal.com 2020-01-06 06:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! And yes, I think we could have spent a lot less than 3 episodes in Harlan, Kansas!

[identity profile] caranfindel.livejournal.com 2020-01-06 06:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I can also see the idea that the writers are going to go with Jared's stated favorite ending and kill off Sam and Dean at the end and Eileen will be pregnant with someone to carry on the Winchester/Campbell line

So the last episode is Eileen and Cas giving the boys a hunter's funeral, and then she goes to the doctor and is told she's pregnant with twin boys? Ha ha ha ha DO NOT WANT.

[identity profile] caranfindel.livejournal.com 2020-01-06 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
{smooches!}

To be fair, they did explain that by telling us Chuck made it possible for a few souls to go from Hell to Heaven just because he liked the Winchesters. It may not be a great explanation, but they didn't completely ignore canon.

[identity profile] caranfindel.livejournal.com 2020-01-06 06:13 pm (UTC)(link)
There basically IS no reaper canon. It's all been rewritten multiple times!

[identity profile] caranfindel.livejournal.com 2020-01-06 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
You mean you're not thrilled that they're separated now? :-/

[identity profile] verucasalt123.livejournal.com 2020-01-06 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
A reappearance of Jessica Moore would not make me at all happy. I mean, I get the symmetry of having her bookend the series but I'm just not a big fan.

I was thrilled for the re-appearance of Adam but it was not unexpected, I knew about it, so I didn't check the box for him. He's been my favorite so far because of his amazing performance, but I do love me some Becky. I even said earlier in the season 'Maybe they'll give us an older, more chilled out version of Becky', so I have had one wish come true this season.

MEG OMG MY KINGDOM FOR THE RETURN OF MEG. Except that I don't think Rachel Miner can work, really, and I'd hate to see someone else in that role, even Meg 1.0 lady.

Agreed. But the "Dean can't sing" myth was circulating fandom for years before D!D's drunk karaoke session, and I've never understood it. :S

Except for the episode where they said God could not affect whether a soul went to heaven or hell, it was completely determined by a person's choices . . .

At the Aussie con, Rachel said she'd love to come back and revive the role if the writers could come up with a good way of having a disabled demon, she thought that would be terrific.

[identity profile] galatera-grass.livejournal.com 2020-01-07 08:26 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. Too much. In almost every episode

[identity profile] caranfindel.livejournal.com 2020-01-07 10:11 am (UTC)(link)
I thought Jensen himself said he decided to make Dean not a good singer. And honestly, in that scene from the video, he’s not what I’d call a good singer. Just your average guy who can sing along with the radio.

[identity profile] caranfindel.livejournal.com 2020-01-07 10:13 am (UTC)(link)
Surely that’s not an issue. This show isn’t exactly full of “family values” even without Destiel.

[identity profile] caranfindel.livejournal.com 2020-01-07 10:14 am (UTC)(link)
Chuck’s a writer! Writers lie! See, everything is covered! ;-)

[identity profile] caranfindel.livejournal.com 2020-01-07 10:17 am (UTC)(link)
And they wouldn’t even have to make her a disabled demon if they decided it conflicted too much with canon (yes, my tongue IS firmly in cheek). She could be seated during her scene. Hell, *I* could write that.

Well, to me, it sounds exactly the same as the way he sings in concert, and everyone loves that, so . . . I dunno.

[personal profile] fanspired 2020-01-07 12:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I think Rachel's point was that she thought it would be cool for the character to be disabled.

[identity profile] caranfindel.livejournal.com 2020-01-07 01:33 pm (UTC)(link)
And I agree, but I can see TPTB saying “a disabled demon?? no way!” but still being able to work with her.

[identity profile] verucasalt123.livejournal.com 2020-01-07 01:54 pm (UTC)(link)
It would, in fact, be terrific!
