Watching other shows through Supernatural-colored glasses: Hannibal

A couple of weeks ago, Hannibal featured a killer who seemed, at the beginning, to be non-human. It turned out to be a human using a mechanized animal-style jaw to kill people in an animalistic way.

But watching the non-human-style killings made me think how fantastic Supernatural could be if it were done by the people who are doing Hannibal. On the network that's showing Hannibal. In Hannibal's time slot. With Hannibal's budget. The gorgeous, cinematic style. The pacing. The writing. The gore, guys. You can't even imagine the gore they'd be allowed to show - no stupid spray of arterial blood every time someone gets killed. The dream sequences. Supernatural would be so beautiful, it makes me want to cry.

And they keep teasing me by featuring noteworthy SPN guest stars:

Kacey Rohl, who played Marin in The Born Again Identity...

Plays hapless Abigail Hobbs...

Demore Barnes, who played archangel Raphael...

Plays creepy Tobias Budge...

and Katharine Isabelle, who played Ava...

plays creepy and probably hapless Margo Verger.

Ironically, a lot of Hannibal fans complain that it would be so much better on cable. And yeah, it would. But a word to the Fannibals... just count your blessings that your favorite show isn't on the CW!

Anyone else a fan?

I watched the first half of Hannibal's S1, and I'll admit I wasn't a fan of the way it handled itself but! It was often quite pretty, and I would be seriously unopposed to some of that. I would probably be satisfied with having TVD's post-production budget. /wistful sigh!

I'M A FAN!! :-D. [livejournal.com profile] kinkajou loves it too...she was showing me some of her hannibal posts on tumblr. The fandom seems to be a cross between hilarious - some of their Hannibal GIF make me LMAO - and horrifying. Very cool...

And yay, for SPN stars. Whenever I see a character from SPN in something, I always get stupidly excited! :-D

xx

I adore this show! It's one of my absolute favourites. I love the sheer wrongness of it all. The cinematography is stunning as is the acting (and wow (spolierish)..., those sex scenes in the beginning of the last episode....incredible).

And I love seeing past SPN actors on it. Margo is wonderful!

I often wonder what SPN would be like with a bigger budget, on a different station etc. we'd get the swearing and the gore and real horror. As it is, I think they do a pretty good job going as far as they can. It's one reason why I'd love so see them make a film. The possibilities of what we'd see....

And to be honest - I don't think I'd cope if it was on cable. As it is I often have to turn away. The brutality is pretty shocking (but...riveting also).

I adore Hannibal! It's the show I look forward to most each week.

I actually think that a lot of early SPN was remarkably beautiful for its budget, which was probably mostly thanks to the late Kim Manners. Interesting question about the gore--is NBC really that much more liberal in its standards than the CW? They're both networks (in the loosest possible sense when it comes to the CW, but still), and I can think of a handful of moments when SPN went for relatively extreme gore--the cold open of "My Bloody Valentine" sticks out to me. I think it's more an audience issue. My sense is that SPN is a lot more invested in appealing to young girls than Hannibal is.

I'd love to have seen what SPN would have looked like as, say, an FX show. If nothing else, I think it would have benefited immensely (and still would) from cable's 13 episode season orders.

I've read that SPN isn't allowed to show certain things. Something about human deaths vs monster deaths. I don't know if it's the audience (I doubt it, the most desirable audience is young men and that's who they'd aim for), the time slot (Hannibal airs an hour later), different network standards, or what.

I love Hannibal and adore Will Graham. And Mads Mikkelson is seriously creepy :)

Ah, now that's an alternate universe I'd like to live in. Rewatching the early season is reminding me how pretty SPN used to look, though. *wistful sigh*

I love Hannibal. Gore isn't something I have particular feelings for or against, but the tableaux they come up with in some of the murder scenes are stunning. And the psychological claustrophobia and weird dream logic of it. It's great. I think I have an episode to catch up on, but Margot's fascinating and I can't wait to see what they do with her.

And I'm not even looking for more gore. Just a slightly more realistic version.

I don't watch Hannibal but man, yes - how awesome it would be if Show had a bigger budget. SO AWESOME.
Although - Supernatural on HBO. That would fucking rock. :)

Dude. Yes.

I've always wished it had a bigger budget. I don't watch Hannibal. Also, being in a later time slot gives you a lot more leeway, because supposedly the young impressionable children are not watching (ha!).

If it was on HBO...OMG! I'd easily settle for it being on AMC. Actually, my dream is to have it on AMC. More money and real swearing and sex.

Oh, yes, HBO would be perfect. Sopranos style.
