Don’t stop believing

I will, at some point, have more to say about the announcement last week that s15 will be the last season of Supernatural. But today I want to talk about what The Husband said, which is that for the last season, each episode should be a homage to the series finale of a classic TV show. And I kinda love that idea. I mean, imagine all the surviving characters in a hug like the end of the Mary Tyler Moore show.

Or, you know, less awesome scenes:

The Husband: They could do one where they go water skiing and jump over a shark. I mean, that wasn't the end of Happy Days, but it was *the end* of Happy Days.

Me: They actually had an episode called "Jump the Shark" where they found out they had a younger half brother. They met him at a restaurant called Cousin Oliver's.*

The Husband: They really are good, aren't they?

And now I'm thinking about what ending they could borrow for the very last episode.



I know Dean wants his Butch and Sundance against the Bolivian Army ending, and having watched this clip, I'm picturing the brothers wounded and trapped and Sam duct-taping a gun to Dean's injured hand and yes, there's a lot to like about it.

Or you could go with the Sopranos, where you can pretend nothing happened and they're both alive and well** and listening to Journey (which I don't think Dean would like).

But I think I have two other favorite options. (Neither of these is Jensen's suggestion that the last scene is Dean trading the Impala for a motorcycle because Sam is dead and he no longer needs a passenger seat. You can go to Hell for that, Jensen.)

One is the Newhart ending, where the character wakes up and realizes the entire series was a dream, and he's actually still in his previous life.

So maybe Jared wakes up as Dean Forrester in Gilmore Girls.

I just had the WEIRDEST dream...

No, of course that's completely unacceptable. The only way to do the Newhart ending would be to have Sam waking up and realizing he fell asleep in his Palo Alto apartment, waiting for Jess to finish her shower.


You okay, baby? Sounded like you were having a horrible nightmare.

But if they were truly going to borrow anyone's ending, it would have to be Six Feet Under, which pretty much set the standard for a proper last episode. The series ends with an amazing fast-forward montage showing the deaths (and a bit of the lives) of the main characters and I SHOULD NOT HAVE WATCHED THIS DURING MY LUNCH BREAK, DAMMIT. {closes office door, wipes eyes}

And I can see this. I can see one of the brothers being the first to go, too young, seeing John and Bobby and EllenJoAshCharlieKevinPamelaEileen on his deathbed. And the other brother, surviving decades longer, watching loved ones die, and finally looking up to see his long-dead brother waiting for him to breathe his last. Yeah, I'd go for that.

Actually, limited to B&S or T&L, I'd go with Thelma and Louise, because Impala. I'll always remember Dean's line, (If you can't help us) "I'll strap my Beautiful Mind brother into the Impala and drive us off a cliff." Because Impala is fam, and they all go together. (sniff)

My ending:

Big battle against some big evil ends with evil vanquished but Sam and Dean dead on the ground.

Camera watches a man's feet walk over to the bodies. Slow pan up the man--it is Chuck.

He looks at the bodies and says, "Endings are hard."

He looks thoughtful.

"But sometimes things don't have to end." Looks like he is seriously considering something.

Fade out.

True dat, though l am surprisingly optimistic about this last season and ending on a high, because I feel Jared and Jensen are not going to accept anything not spectacular. I know they've said before that they don't meddle in the writers room but I this case I believe they would. Still apprehension is high no doubt. But then, I also kind of anticipate not being all happy with the ending, since there's no way to make everyone happy about it. Still, if it makes sense in the overall arc of the boys' story, I'll be good, I think.

I've written so many endings for these two and I've read so many too, and I think I'm quite open to seeing what they do. But I want to cry, and I want too many feels that it hurts, and I want the focus on the brother's; that's not much to ask, right?!

It's 2007 and, fifteen months after the breakdown he had in Palo Alto, Sam finally comes out of the psychotic delusion he's been living in to avoid the pressure of the law school interview that would seal his fate for the rest of his life and admits to his psychiatrist (Dr Novak) that, deep down, he really always wanted to be a writer. He also acknowledges this to his mechanic father who always wanted him to follow him into the family business, and Sam finally forgives John whom he blamed for his mother's suicide since she hung herself from a light fitting when Sam was a baby after discovering that John was having an affair (Yes, Mary was the real woman in white from the pilot - check out her white nightdress at the beginning and note also that the layout of Constance's home was identical to the Winchester home). John, Uncle Bobby, Aunt Ellen and Cousin Jo sit round his bed per the ending of Wizard of Oz and Ellen begs Sam to have a haircut since he's only allowed his hair to be cut once in the whole of the last 15 months. Sam is both sad and relieved to learn that Jess felt unable to keep supporting him through his mental illness and has since moved on to a new relationship. He is much sadder, in fact, to recall that he does not really have a brother. (Check out the apartment in Palo Alto at the start of the pilot: there is a picture of John and Mary but no visible pictures that include Dean). In his remaining time in the sanitarium he recognizes several patients and personnel who clearly inspired the characters of his psychosis - like the pyromaniac psychopath who resembles Lucifer, the redheaded Scottish nurse, and the cockney janitor with his pet Rottweiler, Juliet. Sam searches in vain for a progenitor for the Dean character but is unable to find anyone who fits. He reluctantly concludes that Dean must just have represented an unexpressed part of Sam himself. However, just as he's packing his bag on his last day at the sanitarium a familiar voice asks if he was planning to leave without saying goodbye. He turns to find Dean standing in the doorway. He's been on sick leave so he missed Sam's dramatic recovery, but it turns out he's the orderly who's been responsible for all Sam's practical care for the entire time he's been in the sanitarium. They talk of sealing wax and cabbages and kings for a while, and about times in the past 15 months when Sam has been semi-lucid, and Dean takes an interest in the supernatural thriller novel Sam has started working on. They suggest getting together for a beer some time once Sam has settled into his new life. But before Sam leaves he has to ask: does Dean drive a '67 Chevy Impala? How did you know? asks Dean. Sam hesitates. Maybe you mentioned it sometime, he says. Don't think so. Dean grins. You must be psychic . . .

I did plan that it would be once. It was going to be my finale fic that would explain why Sam's hair grew every season, but only about a month's worth of growth each year. But then they cut Sam's hair in season 10 or whenever, so that was the end of that :P

I hate that possible ending. First of all, Baby needs a good home and not some random stranger, the bike doesn't deserve to be trashed like that and neither does the Grand Canyon! Plus, if he kills himself he'll go to hell and that's just not a Good Thing. Unless Sam's there, of course, because they'll whip it into shape in no time, find the back door out of there and kick ass somewhere else.

I'd just like to see them closing Baby's trunk and saying, "We have work to do." And then off down the road they go...

But I wouldn't be sad if S15 was just 20 consecutive MOTW episodes with poignant brotherly bonding moments over the green cooler at the end of each one.

My favorite finale is Star Trek: The Next Generation. It revisited the pilot, explored a what-if future, and then fixed the present. The last scene, Picard joins the rest of the main crew in their poker game for the first time. I still get goosebumps thinking about him dealing the cards and saying “Five card stud, nothing wild, and the sky’s the limit.” And then the camera spirals out to space and the crew continues on their adventures, just without us.

It would be the “Sam and Dean drive off into the sunset together” ending.
