In sin and error pining

Yes, friends, I am in sin and error pining today, for my sins are many and egregious.

Sin #1: I did not wish [livejournal.com profile] septembers_coda a happy birthday in a timely manner. And I'll burn for that, as Dean would say.

Sin #2: I took the "Who is your Supernatural boyfriend" quiz (thanks to [livejournal.com profile] cassiopeia7) and ended up with Sam.

Which isn't a sin, right? I mean, this is the way the world is supposed to be, right? Except, the thing is, that test was SO easy to cheat. I mean, one question was whether I'd rather date a guy with a leather jacket, a trench coat, a trucker cap, or long hair. COME ON. So I may or may not have ended up with Sam if I'd answered the questions honestly. On the other hand, I don't feel the least bit guilty about this one at all, so is my confession more like a brag? OH WELL. SUCH IS LIFE.

(Dear God. He is so pretty in this pic.)

Sin #3: When I wrote my "what happens after the end of S9" fic, I carelessly gave Cas his wings back. Which flies in the face of canon (heh heh, see what I did there), and also raises problems with my follow-up. So I kind of need to undo that. Is that cool? Can I just go back and rewrite those parts of my story and say "never mind, that didn't happen?" Do people do that?

Sin #4: I'm not allowed to wear jeans and t-shirts to work except on special occasions, and today is not a special occasion. But I'm wearing them anyway. The jeans are velvet, not denim, and the t-shirt is kind of dressy, and I have a cute ruffly cardigan over it, but still. Morally, this is jeans and a t-shirt. That's me, the rebel, sticking it to The Man.

Sin #5: I'm writing this at work. Shhh.

So, what's my penance?

(BTW, if you don't recognize the title, it's from "O Holy Night," which is the Christmas carol I'm obsessively listening to this week.

O holy night, the stars are brightly shining
It is the night of our dear savior's birth
Long lay the world in sin and error pining
Till he appeared and a soul felt its worth

Two very different, but both completely amazing versions, are by:

Straight No Chaser

and Weezer

As for retconning fic, I've never written anything that wasn't basically a one-shot, but I have wanted to edit previously posted fic for less legitimate reasons

Would a less legitimate reason be, for example, that it's the first fic I ever published and I think I could improve it? Cause I'm kinda feeling that too, on a different fic. :-/

I mean, the dude who wrote Naked Lunch republished an edited version of HIS ENTIRE DAMN BOOK (REAL BOOK!)

LOL! I never heard about that. That's a ballsy move.

Idk! I mean, on one hand, I feel like we should own wherever we were at in old pieces, and however they ended up (though lol, I read through my old things [AND NOT SO OLD THINGS] and often wonder to myself why, dead god why, I felt like that was how it should be written), but on the other hand, re-writing doesn't undo the old version, just adds to it, you know? And even if there isn't a ~precedent, I'd be down to have that become more of a thing. And I mean, if LJ fandom is getting smaller, it also means that those of us who stay basically have full run of the place, right? XD We can do whatever we want!! I mean, it's essentially like doing a remix of your own fic (which, er, I have done that >.>). I think it'd be a fun experiment!

AND YOU SHOULD POST IT TO [livejournal.com profile] spnspiration WHEN YOU DO IT. <3

And yeah, ikr??? I don't think it was Naked Lunch he did it with (or maybe it was?) but Burroughs totally did that. And I mean like, Walt Whitman did that, too, multiple times. But Burroughs is a little more contemporary, so it just seems that much more strange. But if he can do it I feel like we're allowed to do it!

I can think of a lot of challenges for redoing your own works. Rewrite an old one to make it better. Rewrite the story from a different character's perspective (like a remix but you have to stick to the same details). Write a coda or epilogue that completely changes the end of your story, like, change a sad ending to a happy one or vice versa. Write the whole story in text messages or as a script.
