Twenty twenty twenty-four hours to go, I wanna be sedated...

Hey, look, I'm doing that weekly post thingie again. What's happening this week?

I signed up for the [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_bigbang earlier today and now I'm kind of regretting it because my story's going to be pretty close to the minimum count, and most of the other stories are RPF and/or very slashy and mine is just Supernatural and gen so no artist is going to be interested. Oh well. I can always illustrate my own fic. Plastic Winchester Theater, anyone?

Get in the car, Cas. We're gonna go get Sam out of Hell.

Speaking of plastic Winchesters, I added to my collection. I picked up a couple of the Funko Mystery Minis, where you can't see what you're buying. I ended up with Cas and Abaddon, which is awesome, but I'm afraid I'll have to keeping buying the damn things until I get Gabriel. Why Gabriel? I have no idea. I just wants him, my precious.

This was supposed to look like they're fighting but it looks more like they're fending off the paparazzi.

And in a little more than 24 hours I'll be watching a new Supernatural again. So, I've got that going for me. And I'm only lightly spoiled so far. Can I stay that way? It would be nice if I could just go to sleep and wake up at showtime tomorrow!

See you on the other side!

Gen!!! *bounces* I LOVE Gen stories.

We've got to survive spoilerless even longer than you - and annoyingly my hubby has the day off on Thursday which cramps my SPN watching style somewhat. Dammit.

Mmm. Methinks your Sam and Dean minis are not mini enough for that Impala. LOL!

I love gen stories! I don't read slashy or RPF stories.

Gen!!! *bounces* I LOVE Gen stories.

Says the woman whose icon is a BUTT! XD

Seriously, I'm glad to hear that. I hope you're not alone.

We've got to survive spoilerless even longer than you - and annoyingly my hubby has the day off on Thursday which cramps my SPN watching style somewhat. Dammit.

My husband had started watching it with me much of the time. I love the guy, really I do, but sometimes I wish he'd go to bed so I could rewind and watch the really pretty parts...

Mmm. Methinks your Sam and Dean minis are not mini enough for that Impala. LOL!

It's very far away! XD

I might have Jared's pretty little bum as my icon, but the story with the bum is only mildly slashy which is about as far as most of my writing gets. 85% of my fics are Gen, I reckon. And reading-wise, I love both, so arting for either is lovely jubbly!

[identity profile] septembers-coda.livejournal.com 2016-01-19 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I even encounter that strong predilection for RPF in slash challenges, or slash-friendly challenges, that I enter. I'm not trying to dis RPF, but it's so weird that it seems to have taken over, in terms of popularity, for SPN fic. I mostly can't read RPF; sometimes I try if it's an interesting sort of AU. Trying to branch out, a week or two ago I read a rather poorly written J2 fic. It didn't even have much porn in it. It was a couple of weeks old, if I recall correctly... and closing in on 150 comments. 150! What SPN fic, no matter how brilliant, ever gets that many? It just really irritated me... not that I don't want RPF writers to get the praise, just... ugh. STOP TALKING, SC. ;-)

ETA: I love gen, too; all my favorite writers are gen-focused. <3 Fight the good fight! I'll be reading it.

I'll do gen! Half the reason i dont sign up is a fear of lack of gen

[identity profile] caranfindel.livejournal.com 2016-01-19 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
It's mind boggling, I tell you.

[identity profile] caranfindel.livejournal.com 2016-01-19 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I can assure you that if you sign up for this one, there will be at least one gen story. With some hurt Sam. Just sayin.

PERSONALLY I am a big fan of Big Bangs that are 20k and not a penny over! XD That's my plan every year, and trust me, any word over is literally a curse. And while obviously Big Bang means a very different thing in terms of readership for those of us who write SPN gen vs. RPF slash, haha, the artists on both ends are fantabulous, so at least we have that! <333

I'm already so excited to read your nascent BB, and it's still January! TRUST ME, I'LL BE THERE. And I always have infinitely more to say about SPN gen than RPS, because I don't really know enough about RPS to speak to it adequately. XD And gen always deserves extra special love anyhow. ;P

I know what you mean, though! I don't think RPF is actually literally more popular than SPN fic itself, but I think it depends on the pocket. Like, Tumblr is super into D/C, as is AO3. The spnj2bb has historically been very J2 centric, though also Sam/Dean (though now Sam/Dean has its own like, three separate BBs/RBBs, XD)--DCBB being, of course, where the D/Cers tend to flock instead.

But yeah, comment discrepancy is both depressing and hilarious in turns. Because it's like LOLLLLL 150 comments, what is that number even?? Anything above 7 and I'm like damn, son, just hit the jackpot! how can I do that again? XD Though sometimes I wonder if genre is even the most determining factor. I mean, I've written slash and it's hardly more popular than my gen. I guess partly I don't know the right people for that, and partly that J2 fic you read clearly had something to it that other people really wanted? (Even if we completely missed what that was, ha! To clarify I have no idea what fic you're talking about, obviously, but I'm very familiar with the scenario broadly speaking.)

[identity profile] caranfindel.livejournal.com 2016-01-20 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, your comments are always better than my fics anyway, so even if it was 20,001 words of the worst possible tripe*, not only RPF but featuring myself as a Mary Sue, I know you'd have something interesting to say about it.

*Not saying RPF is automatically the worst possible tripe. But mine would be. It would be the only RPF fic on A03 to get no kudos at all, and I'd totally win that challenge.

[identity profile] freya922.livejournal.com 2016-01-20 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
I can't wait for tomorrow night. I've tried so hard to keep from being spoiled... I just wish I didn't have a 12 hour day right before but that's what my iTunes subscription is for- having it handy to watch again after I'm rested up! Counting the minutes...

[identity profile] indiachick.livejournal.com 2016-01-20 07:34 am (UTC)(link)
Gen is GOOD. And artists will be there. (Although I love your minis and wish we could indeed get plastic Winchester theatre too.) I'm so glad you've signed up, it'll be fun :)

I have written RPF in the past but I don't think I will, again. That part of fandom sometimes seems like a different fandom, or at least a clearly defined subset with its own rules and interests. Mostly what it comes down to is that we are clueless, you and me and kalliel, and AO3 and RPF and other stuff befuddles us. XD

Very excited for the new episode and not spoiled at all.

[identity profile] indiachick.livejournal.com 2016-01-20 07:46 am (UTC)(link)
Loll, comment discrepancy XD. The thing we'll never figure out. I suppose it also has to do with the kind of slash. While Sam/Dean has the forbidden love kinda thing going for it, it's pretty much spun away from regular show-world SPN fic to mostly AUs. RPF has its own set of complicated relationships and taboos that writers seem to like writing about and then there's just utter cute fluff and AU world building. And there are readers for all of these things (or kinks?), perhaps MORE of them compared to regular show-based fic? (Incidentally on AO3, my RPF and Sam/Dean dark-fic has more hits and kudos than other things, LOOOOL. I don't understand this phenomenon)

I think we're gonna end up with a thesis on this stuff. XD

[identity profile] caranfindel.livejournal.com 2016-01-20 10:05 am (UTC)(link)
And now I'm wondering what the rules are for RPF. SPN slash can apparently include anything - brother incest, father incest, underage, non-con, combinations of all of the above... What is forbidden in RPF?

[identity profile] caranfindel.livejournal.com 2016-01-20 10:06 am (UTC)(link)
How soon after the ep airs is it available on iTunes?

[identity profile] indiachick.livejournal.com 2016-01-20 10:37 am (UTC)(link)
Hehe. Not forbidden, but what is usually warned for is non-AU RPF (as in J2, as they are, in real life, with families and making Supernatural), infidelity kink, and there is usually a large amount of AUs involving all of those things applicable to SPN slash that you mentioned + things that are generally triggery for some people like priest AUs, age-difference with one player most usually underage, and religious kinks. But it's kinda-sorta the thing that you associate with Lolita being "erotic": it isn't going to be okay at ALL in REAL LIFE, and nobody's saying it is, but in fic it flies, and under good writing it flourishes. (And there are a lot of good writers doing RPF in LJ.)

And I don't know how, but even in AU RPF there are quite often commenters saying the characters are "in character", so there is something I'm missing there.

[identity profile] madebyme-x.livejournal.com 2016-01-20 12:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I love a gen fic - especially a juicy casefic bigbang, so yay, I can't wait!!! Don't worry about attracting an artist, just about all the artists on my flist do gen art, so I'm sure your summary with get snapped up.

And yay, new ep soon!! I've curbed my spn fansite viewing for fear of spoilers, it's mostly worked, like you I've only see a few tiny things.

[identity profile] septembers-coda.livejournal.com 2016-01-20 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
ha ha ha... your "jackpot" number is exactly the same as mine. <3 8 comments and I'm like, this is one popular fic! That was what was weird about the RPF fic I was talking about-- it was on LJ, where it seems like fic in general gets less response these days, though my statistical sampling is far from complete. I can't speak to it, because all of the most popular genres are stuff I don't usually read. With that fic that got 150 comments... well, yeah, it wasn't well written (and I can't help still getting a bit upset that no one cares about that) but there WAS something kind of compelling about it-- I finished it, after all, and it was pretty long! And yeah... there are so many RPF J2 fics out there, I figured it was safe to talk about it and it would remain anonymous, because I would never want to dis anyone for writing stuff I happen not to like (or for getting a lot of comments).

I'm with ya on the slash vs. gen not necessarily being the factor... some of my slash is wildly unpopular, and with a paring like Cas/Faramir LOTR crossover, that makes sense, or even with my usual Sassy. It gets very little response on LJ. On Ao3, my most popular fic is my porniest (I think it's really the tags more than the content), according to kudos... but it got very few comments, and one of the ones it did get was simply "this is not porn". Which... was the reader expressing disappointment? Disagreement with my tags? Approval of quality of writing? Who knows...

My second-most popular fic is a fluff/angst, short remix, and I think the original writer's popularity is the only reason people like it. It's also fairly tropey.

All this to say... who the @%#$ knows? :-D I try, these days, to just write what I'm really interested in because I want it to exist. Whether anyone else cares or not. I can't always avoid the outrage/jealousy/butthurt... but I know I'm not alone in the, whaaaaa? So that's nice. ;-)

[identity profile] septembers-coda.livejournal.com 2016-01-20 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL, I would LOVE to see you two write a thesis on this and I could help with research/data gathering. ;-)

LOL at "this is not porn." If it helps at all, the last comment I got on AO3 was "this was hella confusing and not as funny as I'd hoped." XDD

I'll always write what I'm interested in, because ain't nobody got time for anything else. But I will also always wonder why other people aren't interested in what I'm interested in, haha. Both in terms of "okay, this is a legitimately popular thing that people actually like (e.g. Sam and Dean), UNLESS THEY'RE IN MY HANDSSSS" (haha) or "okay but why DON'T people like Rowena holding a conversation with 12 chickens????!!!"

Hypothetical example.

Maybe.

"This character, who is actually a real person, is doing things I think he'd do, other than having sex with his costar, which is something I simply wish he'd do..." Yeah, weird. :)

[identity profile] indiachick.livejournal.com 2016-01-20 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
The last one I got on AO3 was "hey, I have no idea what just happened in this fic", so, we're all in the same boat. XD

We should make T shirts! XD Exclusive Club T Shirts.

LOL, wanna read it? You could be, like, the third person! :-D Here's a link:
http://septembers-coda.livejournal.com/62577.html

(I know you're not a slash fan generally. It's not graphic, if that helps).

[identity profile] septembers-coda.livejournal.com 2016-01-21 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL! Ao3 commenters, man. WTF? Hellooooo, symbolism or subtext, people? I guess some readers just want you to do all the work for them. There's a prescribed formula that most fics fall into, and the reason you and others like brightly_lit and kalliel are my favorite writers is that you DON'T follow it. But that commenter must just prefer the formula, and that's fine; there's PLENTY of fic out there for her. :-}

What is the point of a comment like any of the three we're talking about here? I mean, sometimes I wonder if they're all 15 (No offense to intelligent, thoughtful 15-year-olds intended). I need to quote the Simpsons here: do you ever think anything you DON'T say?

So, YEAH. We need T-shirts. It's a club I'm proud to be in...

Get me to an airport, put me on a plane...

Is this too cruel? ;-)

[identity profile] septembers-coda.livejournal.com 2016-01-21 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG, THIS MAYBE-HYPOTHETICAL NEEDS TO BE REALITY. *reminds self to check kalliel's journal* Why would anyone not be interested in that, indeed? I am dead curious about these 12 chickens. <3

And I hear ya, too, about the popular turning into the unpopular in your hands... I definitely get that. and I get another thing, which is like, "ugh, I just crapped out this tropey nothing fic, it's probably been done 1,000 times before, and THIS is what people like? READ MY CAS/FARAMIR FIC." ;-)
