Hey, look, I'm doing that weekly post thingie again. What's happening this week?

I signed up for the [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_bigbang earlier today and now I'm kind of regretting it because my story's going to be pretty close to the minimum count, and most of the other stories are RPF and/or very slashy and mine is just Supernatural and gen so no artist is going to be interested. Oh well. I can always illustrate my own fic. Plastic Winchester Theater, anyone?

Get in the car, Cas. We're gonna go get Sam out of Hell.

Speaking of plastic Winchesters, I added to my collection. I picked up a couple of the Funko Mystery Minis, where you can't see what you're buying. I ended up with Cas and Abaddon, which is awesome, but I'm afraid I'll have to keeping buying the damn things until I get Gabriel. Why Gabriel? I have no idea. I just wants him, my precious.

This was supposed to look like they're fighting but it looks more like they're fending off the paparazzi.

And in a little more than 24 hours I'll be watching a new Supernatural again. So, I've got that going for me. And I'm only lightly spoiled so far. Can I stay that way? It would be nice if I could just go to sleep and wake up at showtime tomorrow!

See you on the other side!

I know what you mean, though! I don't think RPF is actually literally more popular than SPN fic itself, but I think it depends on the pocket. Like, Tumblr is super into D/C, as is AO3. The spnj2bb has historically been very J2 centric, though also Sam/Dean (though now Sam/Dean has its own like, three separate BBs/RBBs, XD)--DCBB being, of course, where the D/Cers tend to flock instead.

But yeah, comment discrepancy is both depressing and hilarious in turns. Because it's like LOLLLLL 150 comments, what is that number even?? Anything above 7 and I'm like damn, son, just hit the jackpot! how can I do that again? XD Though sometimes I wonder if genre is even the most determining factor. I mean, I've written slash and it's hardly more popular than my gen. I guess partly I don't know the right people for that, and partly that J2 fic you read clearly had something to it that other people really wanted? (Even if we completely missed what that was, ha! To clarify I have no idea what fic you're talking about, obviously, but I'm very familiar with the scenario broadly speaking.)

Loll, comment discrepancy XD. The thing we'll never figure out. I suppose it also has to do with the kind of slash. While Sam/Dean has the forbidden love kinda thing going for it, it's pretty much spun away from regular show-world SPN fic to mostly AUs. RPF has its own set of complicated relationships and taboos that writers seem to like writing about and then there's just utter cute fluff and AU world building. And there are readers for all of these things (or kinks?), perhaps MORE of them compared to regular show-based fic? (Incidentally on AO3, my RPF and Sam/Dean dark-fic has more hits and kudos than other things, LOOOOL. I don't understand this phenomenon)

I think we're gonna end up with a thesis on this stuff. XD

LOL, I would LOVE to see you two write a thesis on this and I could help with research/data gathering. ;-)

ha ha ha... your "jackpot" number is exactly the same as mine. <3 8 comments and I'm like, this is one popular fic! That was what was weird about the RPF fic I was talking about-- it was on LJ, where it seems like fic in general gets less response these days, though my statistical sampling is far from complete. I can't speak to it, because all of the most popular genres are stuff I don't usually read. With that fic that got 150 comments... well, yeah, it wasn't well written (and I can't help still getting a bit upset that no one cares about that) but there WAS something kind of compelling about it-- I finished it, after all, and it was pretty long! And yeah... there are so many RPF J2 fics out there, I figured it was safe to talk about it and it would remain anonymous, because I would never want to dis anyone for writing stuff I happen not to like (or for getting a lot of comments).

I'm with ya on the slash vs. gen not necessarily being the factor... some of my slash is wildly unpopular, and with a paring like Cas/Faramir LOTR crossover, that makes sense, or even with my usual Sassy. It gets very little response on LJ. On Ao3, my most popular fic is my porniest (I think it's really the tags more than the content), according to kudos... but it got very few comments, and one of the ones it did get was simply "this is not porn". Which... was the reader expressing disappointment? Disagreement with my tags? Approval of quality of writing? Who knows...

My second-most popular fic is a fluff/angst, short remix, and I think the original writer's popularity is the only reason people like it. It's also fairly tropey.

All this to say... who the @%#$ knows? :-D I try, these days, to just write what I'm really interested in because I want it to exist. Whether anyone else cares or not. I can't always avoid the outrage/jealousy/butthurt... but I know I'm not alone in the, whaaaaa? So that's nice. ;-)

LOL at "this is not porn." If it helps at all, the last comment I got on AO3 was "this was hella confusing and not as funny as I'd hoped." XDD

I'll always write what I'm interested in, because ain't nobody got time for anything else. But I will also always wonder why other people aren't interested in what I'm interested in, haha. Both in terms of "okay, this is a legitimately popular thing that people actually like (e.g. Sam and Dean), UNLESS THEY'RE IN MY HANDSSSS" (haha) or "okay but why DON'T people like Rowena holding a conversation with 12 chickens????!!!"

Hypothetical example.

Maybe.

The last one I got on AO3 was "hey, I have no idea what just happened in this fic", so, we're all in the same boat. XD

LOL! Ao3 commenters, man. WTF? Hellooooo, symbolism or subtext, people? I guess some readers just want you to do all the work for them. There's a prescribed formula that most fics fall into, and the reason you and others like brightly_lit and kalliel are my favorite writers is that you DON'T follow it. But that commenter must just prefer the formula, and that's fine; there's PLENTY of fic out there for her. :-}

What is the point of a comment like any of the three we're talking about here? I mean, sometimes I wonder if they're all 15 (No offense to intelligent, thoughtful 15-year-olds intended). I need to quote the Simpsons here: do you ever think anything you DON'T say?

So, YEAH. We need T-shirts. It's a club I'm proud to be in...

OMG, THIS MAYBE-HYPOTHETICAL NEEDS TO BE REALITY. *reminds self to check kalliel's journal* Why would anyone not be interested in that, indeed? I am dead curious about these 12 chickens. <3

And I hear ya, too, about the popular turning into the unpopular in your hands... I definitely get that. and I get another thing, which is like, "ugh, I just crapped out this tropey nothing fic, it's probably been done 1,000 times before, and THIS is what people like? READ MY CAS/FARAMIR FIC." ;-)

(I know you're not a slash fan generally. It's not graphic, if that helps).
