Still thinking about 14.05, and other things

First, I find it interesting that, in the episode poll for 14.05, none of you (so far) thought Sam appreciated it when people kept telling him he was a born hunter. I was sure someone would choose that option, and I'm tickled to see that we all seem to agree he has mixed feelings, at best, about being "born to it." Because (1) I thought Jared played that ambivalence really well, and (b) why would Sam be happy about that? With his canonical mixed feelings (at best) about dedicating his life to hunting, and his history of being "born to do" anything? Why would he unequivocally welcome those remarks?

And that leads me down a rabbit hole of feels about what these guys have been "destined" to do, and how they've subverted it recently. Dean was supposed to become Michael's vessel in order to kill Lucifer, thereby killing his own brother. Instead, he became Michael's vessel in order to save his brother. Sam was supposed to rule Hell and lead a demon army. Instead, he made sure there would be no ruler of Hell (or declared himself de facto ruler of Hell, depending on how you look at it) and then basically told the demons to fuck off. I'm sure this isn't intentional, but I do love that the brothers have taken these plans and prophesies and turned them upside down. And in a delicious twist, Sam is finally doing what the BMoL assumed he was doing all along - assuming a leadership role over a network of hunters.

I'm a little surprised, though, that so many of you thought the djinn freaked out when he accessed Dean's nightmares because he saw Michael hiding inside him. This djinn was already working with Michael. And when he thought Michael had rocked up to his door to put him through a test, he didn't freak out, he just played along. He was surprised to find out he wasn't actually dealing with Michael at all. So why would he be horrified to find the archangel lurking inside of Dean, when that was what he believed was happening until a couple of minutes prior?

Yeah, I know there's every chance that this is exactly what happened. But if so, I'm disappointed that they chose to play it this way.

And speaking of delicious... I was off Monday for Veterans Day, which (as you know) meant I spent a few hours watching Supernatural reruns on TNT. They were from s1, and I couldn't help but think about people watching the show for the first time, having never been exposed to the glory that is later seasons Jared Padalecki, thinking Dean is the only smoking hot Hottie McHotterson on the show, and Sam is the geeky brother with the awful haircut, and then all of a sudden you get to Hell House and THIS GUY WALKS OUT OF THE BATHROOM.


From this to THIS... the moment that changed history.

I mean, getting him all wet and slicking those bangs out of his face is enough, but glistening and clad only in a low-slung skimpy towel? How did people handle it?



I know what my episode review would have sounded like, and it would have had VERY LITTLE to do with the actual plot.

And next there was Something Wicked and the purple dog shirt. Why is this shirt so iconic? What is it about this shirt that grabbed us and won't let go? I don't know.


But I can't argue with it.

It might have given you more insight into the Wincest phenomenon, too, cause that dynamic came over really strongly in the early seasons when there were no later seasons to dilute it. When I was watching the show back then it went like this:

Bugs: Sam and Dean get mistaken for a gay couple.
Me: Show's courting the gay dollar.

Something Wicked: Sam and Dean get mistaken for a gay couple.
Me: This again : /

Playthings: Sam and Dean get mistaken for a gay couple.
Me: Oh, I dunno, maybe it's not that cynical. Maybe it's just a way of covertly sneaking a gay romantic dynamic onto prime-time TV (which was never gonna happen overtly, not back then).

Playthings: Drunk scene.
Me: Oh crap. Oh, no seriously, these two Have to get together! *starts writing wincest fanfiction*

Addendum, after googling wincest, comes across Maichan's Fumbling Toward Ecstasy video
Me: *having heart attack* OMG Are they gonna get together?!! Would show go that far?!! Oh wait, it's video-shopped, of course. Calm down girl. *heart attack narrowly averted* Man that kiss was convincing, tho!

I confess I didn't absorb the 'download' part of your request when I got all excited about providing you with links. I've never tried downloading them myself, but they've been on youtube for years so I hope they'll stay there for a good long while. I've just googled "how to download off youtube" and found this article. I don't know if you'll find it helpful, but I hope so :)
