I have just watched 12.06, "Celebrating the Life of Asa Fox" on TNT, and I have some thoughts…

In the montage of Asa making out with various babes in his car, one of those women must have been Tasha Banes.

When Dean bitches at his mom because she's driving around looking up things in John's journal instead of asking her kids about it, I want her to thump him upside the head and say "You were four years old last month! I am not ready to treat you like an adult! Will you just give me a little time to deal with this?"

Jody met Asa "a few months ago" and she's already (1) met his mother and (b) started fantasizing about a life with him? Girl moves fast.

It's interesting that Jody's immediate reaction, when learning Mary is alive, is isn't this awesome? instead of um, my son came back to life too and that turned out not so good, so be careful, guys.

I love these guys with Jody. I really do. She should have been their mom.

I'm sure I will have more thoughts later, but today these things are on my mind.

Yesterday I was blessed with the opportunity to watch 5.16, "Dark Side of the Moon," on TNT. The scene near the end, where the angel Joshua tells the Winchesters that God knows what's going on and isn't going to do anything and wants them to stop bugging him… well, it hits harder in light of what we learn about Chuck at the end of s14, doesn't it? At the time I thought Joshua was describing a God-the-clockmaker role, a God who just wanted to let his creation run on its own. But now we know that Chuck wasn't just declining to fix things for the Winchesters. He was actively setting them up and enjoying the drama. And yes, I'm sure the writers weren't thinking about how things would play out nine seasons later when they wrote that scene. It's just nice that the Continuity Fairy gave us this unintentional gift.

Other amazing things about this episode include: Dean having to watch Sam get shot, "I Wuv Hugz," Sam's kicked-puppy face, and "I'm dead"/"Condolences."

Another thing that struck me was how hard Pamela tried to get Dean to accept that if he let Michael use him as a vessel, the inevitable deaths of thousands (millions?) of people wasn't anything to be concerned about.

I know that Michael wants to take you out for a test drive… {snip} What happens if you play ball with them? Worst case.

A lot of people die.

And then they come here. Is that really so bad? Look. Maybe… you don't have to fight it so hard. That's all I'm trying to say.

And immediately after that conversation, Ash finds a "short cut to the Garden" that, oddly enough, opens right into the old Lawrence house where they'll be caught by Zachariah.

So I wondered why we ever thought any of this was real. Why we didn't all decide Pamela and Ash were both fabrications created by Zachariah. And then I realized that I had already come to this conclusion, and had ficced it. But where? It's not on my LJ anywhere. I think I posted it in the comments to someone else's post. Probably [livejournal.com profile] kalliel; I think she's the only one whose comments I abused in that particular manner. But I found it in my files, and I present it to you now. I don't know when I wrote it, but I see it was probably right after we met Joshua 2.0 in s14. Apparently it was in response to some discussion about Sam and Dean being soulmates with a shared Heaven:

Last week [livejournal.com profile] kalliel posted this review of 14.15, "Peace of Mind," that basically made me want to curl up in the corner and sob, especially when she talks about Sam breaking down (or just breaking) and telling Dean how much he hates the bunker right now, and how he needs a break, and Dean just saying "okay" and wandering off, and just go read it if you haven't, okay?

And then earlier this week [livejournal.com profile] finchandsparrow posted a review of 14.05, "Nightmare Logic," which may be delayed but is definitely worth the read. Particularly the bits about the performative nature of Mary's interactions with her sons, about how she seems to work so hard at looking like she has a real, actual relationship with them, and yet, there's nothing there.

So it was fitting, perhaps, that I caught 12.13, "Family Feud," as a TNT rerun yesterday, because it combines these two things: Sam needing something from his family that he's not getting, and Mary trying to look like she cares.

If you're reading this and thinking but Dean doesn't get what he needs either! then let me assure you I agree with you. But I'm talking about Sam right now.

...and what about Naomi?

(Are you old enough that what about Naomi actually means something to you?)

So, I've been thinking about Naomi in 14.08...

Yeah, I know, I should be giving you an episode poll. I'm working on it. (Although, the number of poll voters has gone down every week since 14.01, and I don't know if that's lack of interest in the show or lack of interest in the poll.) But I'm distracted by a couple of thoughts...

Episode 13.22, "Exodus," was on last night. I watched it, because duh, I'm only human. I mean, yes, there's some ridiculous unnecessary shit in this episode (AU Cas, I'm looking at you, looking RIGHT AT YOU and doing the thing where I point to my eyes and then your eyes to make sure you know I'm LOOKING AT YOU) but it also has one of my favorite scenes of the season. Maybe one of my favorite scenes of the entire series.

Sometimes I have to sit and think about this episode. About this scene.

I have to think about Sam, anxious but defiant. As he always is.

Going through my s13 episode recaps for the s13 wrap-up poll reminded me of so many wonderful things I'd forgotten. I know this season fell short in some ways, but in other ways it was marvelous, and for some reason, many of them slipped my mind. Dean being unable to breathe in "Good Intentions," and reaching out to Sam, and Sam yanking him out of the dungeon and pawing at him in the hallway? Dean patting at Sam's "Disney princess hair," and Sam shaking him off, in "A Most Holy Man?" Sam trying SO HARD to be nice to Dean in "Advanced Thanatology," and the story about him trying to talk a stripper into going to nursing school? These things are gold.

(You know what isn't gold? I forgot to add Dean's death to the questions about character deaths. Even though I mentioned it in a different question. I feel like an idiot."

And I was also reminded to two mytharc-related things. One was actually near the end of the season, in "Unfinished Business," when the Trickster tells Gabriel that he lived for nothing, and he'll die for nothing. Considering that he died buying the Winchesters time to go through the rift, and they just stood there and watched him die instead of going through the rift, I think it's fair to say that prophecy was accurate.

The other is this graffiti we saw in "The Bad Place." (There be spoilers ahead if you somehow don't know how s13 ended.)

How about one more poll, where we talk about season 13 as a whole?

I mentioned in my poll and/or review that the guys stayed in suits pretty much throughout "Breakdown." Which I liked. A lot. But it made me think about all the times they didn't stay in suits. Like in "Everybody Hates Hitler," when they're at Aaron's house, in suits, and they realize they need to go to the library, and they jump up and leave.

Oh hi there, Hot Professor Sam.

And when we see them immediately after that in the library, they're in civvies. What did they do, change in the car? And why?

And more importantly, why don't we ever get to watch?

And finally, I've been informed that my review is not actually a review because I "basically typed out the entire episode." So, I apologize to anyone who accidentally read an entire review and didn't realize, until the end, that I was basically typing out the entire episode, and was therefore spoiled.

13.01 Codas

So far, I've only seen a few, although all are outstanding. (If you like having your heart broken. Which I do). So allow me to recommend the following:

My unfinished fic

This isn't an episode coda, it's more like a prologue. I started writing this right after Kelly made her escape in S12, and Lucifer was allegedly back in the cage. It got Kripke'd pretty quickly, so I set it aside. But after 13.01, I liked that I had kind of predicted the Sam/Dean dichotomy toward Jack (as if we didn't all see that coming), so even though it's rough, I'm going to post the part I actually finished...

I've been thinking a lot about Mary's actions this season, particularly in 12.12. I came down pretty hard on her, but some Tumblr conversations have got me rethinking things.
