In season 4 Dean fucks up, though in "When the Levee Breaks" he is desperately trying to keep the promise he made to Sam, to not let Sam turn into something he's not.
You know, a lot of people have issues with this, the way Dean is willing to let Sam die rather than turn into a monster. But he really was doing what Sam wanted. As you said, Sam had begged him earlier not to let him turn into something he wasn't; something that would hurt people. I think a lot of fans don't see that.
