Once again, my Summergen gifter went in a direction that I never even considered when I came up with the prompt. Is that what normally happens? This is only my second year to participate, so I don't know. What I do know is that it makes it so much fun! I know writers often apologize for not producing what the writer expected (and I may have even done that last year? who knows) but honestly, I really enjoy getting a story I didn't expect. I'm not going to tell you what I like about it, because that would be spoilery, but I am going to ask that you go read it yourself and show my mystery writer some love!

Yeah, I'm talking about [livejournal.com profile] kalliel again, because she posted this lovely essay about Easter eggs, the little bits of her life that she puts into her fic. And she's had an interesting life and such cool (and very Winchester-eque) travels. I mean, look at everything that she packed into one fic.

Me, on the other hand... I've had a fairly boring life, and very little of it makes its way into anything I write. Y'all do not want to read about Sam and Dean's frustrating trip to Walmart, or their stop at a Hampton Inn that looks exactly like every other Hampton Inn (although, Dean would love the breakfast buffet, particularly the make-your-own waffle station). But every once in a while, something real creeps in.

Of flesh and blood I'm made was inspired by a conversation between a family member and a nurse in the ER.

But I've become what I can't be uses a location I've seen while traveling (the giant double church, although it's not actually in Memphis).

My untitled Nazi car fic came about after I rented a Volkswagen and started wondering what Dean would say about it.

Coda was inspired by my very real inability to deal with a whole raw chicken.

What about you? What sights and/or experiences make their way into your writing?

(And okay, now I have to do it...)

My own personal muse has curled up and died. I've given up on my Big Bang that's due next week, and most likely the Oh Sam comment fill that I think is supposed to come out next week as well. All my muse gives me these days is the finger.

Luckily, other people continue to astound me. In particular, [livejournal.com profile] crowroad3, who wrote the amazing Caoinheadh, which is allegedly inspired by my 13.19 episode coda but surpasses it in so, so many ways. And [livejournal.com profile] kalliel, of whom I've often said I'd hate her if I didn't love her so much, because she's so talented she just makes me emerald fanfiction green with jealousy. Read How Many Thousands and tell me how right I am.

Why is this here? I don't know. Maybe I just needed to see it today. It's not always about you, you know.
(Sorry, I didn't mean that. It's for you too.)

I'm late to this, as I'm late to everything.

If you read LJ on your phone, your year-in-review graphic doesn't have the cheerful holiday goat, even if you're viewing it in a browser and not through the app. Thanks, LJ.

106 posts doesn't seem like very many, especially when you consider that approximately half of them must be episode recap/reviews and polls. I posted a couple of metas and 11 fics in 2017, although one was unfinished and another was actually posted to Tumblr before 2017, so that's really only ten written in 2017. And four of those were short episode codas (in fact, one was a single sentence). I guess my biggest accomplishment, if you can call it that, was that I finally participated in Summergen (which turned out to be a lot of fun and I will hopefully do it again this year). The rest of my posts were mostly nonsensical whining.

The interesting thing about this is, I've seen the stats for people on my flist who have a lot more posts and a lot more interaction from readers. And yet, my ranking of overall LJ users is pretty high (75 as of today). Since that ranking can't be based on my prodigious posting schedule (heh) or my large number of likes and comments (an average of a little over 17 per post, which is mostly from people who have entire conversations in my comments that don't involve me at all, not that I'm complaining because I actually love that y'all do that), so it's got to be based on hits. As in, maybe I get a lot of visitors (I do hit the top 25 posts occasionally) who just aren't commenting. So. Say hi, guys!

Anyway. My favorite things about 2017 were works that were done for me, not by me.

First, the incredibly talented [livejournal.com profile] crowroad3 posted all your lovers, a gorgeous little Trials!Sam fic, on my birthday. I said it then and I'll say it again: I'm simply not worthy.

Second, if you're like me, you have a silly fantasy that one day a talented, respected, dare I say beloved artist will read one of your works and say "I want to art that." And it happened to me, when [livejournal.com profile] quickreaver created this masterpiece to accompany my OhSam prompt fill. Literally a dream come true, guys.

Finally, [livejournal.com profile] tifaching got my [livejournal.com profile] spn_summergen prompt and turned it into Message in a Bottle, which is nothing I ever would have come up with, and I guess that's the best part of Summergen, isn't it? Someone taking your wee little seedling and nurturing it into a beautiful flower that you didn't even know existed?

So, that was my LJ year. Real life? Eh. There were upheavals of various kinds, medical dramas both human and canine, setbacks and triumphs. As always, I found myself ending the year pretty much in the same position I was in when it began - broke, exhausted, and frustrated at my inability to find a nice comfortable pair of black over-the-knee boots. Such is life.

How about some resolutions for 2018?

1. Finish those two fics that I've been poking at for a year - you know, the ones where you ignore the huge chunks of plot still to be written, and keep rewriting and refining the non-plot bits that you've already done?
2. Post more recs. Every time I love something, I should share it with you guys.
3. Continue to fight for my right to party.
4. Follow/friend more people. I have a bad habit of thinking I follow someone just because I read a lot of comments from them on my recaps or polls. Luckily, LJ is doing this thing now where they send me "things you missed," and I usually see that email and think "how did I miss this post?" and then realize it's because I haven't friended that person. So I'm gonna fix that.
5. Like more. Comment more. I'm bad at this, because I do almost all of my LJing on my phone, but I just need to get over it.
6. Endeavor to persevere.
7. Whine a little less. (Maybe. That's a hard one.)
8. Find those damn boots.

Let's have a great year!

Since I don't have a new episode to review this week, let me fill that hole in your life with one of my very favorite things: hurt!Sam fics.

Friends, Kansans (for surely we are all honorary Kansans today), fandom, lend me your ears. This is a particularly auspicious day. This year, November 2, the day that made the Winchesters what they are, is on a Thursday. I'm wearing plaid again for the occasion, some kind of brushed fabric as soft and warm as a hug from Sam Winchester (and oh, what a hug that would be, and though statistically there's a good chance it would be the last hug you ever received, especially if you were a woman in season 12, well, what a way to go, right?). But I digress. I come to bury Sam Winchester, not to praise him. Although... can't we do both?

Yes, yes we can.

Please stop by the [livejournal.com profile] ohsam November 2017 Comment Meme and leave a prompt, or fill a prompt, or do both. Let's both praise and bury our precious little Sammy. (Well, not actually bury. Let's just rough him up a bit.)

See you there!

I feel bad reccing Summergen fics when I'm pretty sure I haven't even managed to comment on some of the ones on this list. And really, every single fic this year was a good read (and God, I'm not even talking about the art yet!). But here's a list of some that really grabbed me, either because they push my own personal buttons or because I love that writer's style or because they're just objectively good

Brontide by Brightly-lit - Subtle and beautifully creepy. Brightly is like, one of the nicest people in the fandom, and doesn't really participate on LJ now, so it was such a thrill to see this was her work.

Signs of Life by wetsammywinchester - Does the impossible by making "Red Meat" even better.

Abide by withthedemonblood - I cannot describe my feelings about this fic without spoiling the fic, so I'll just strongly suggest that you read it.

2081 and Higher by [livejournal.com profile] kalliel - One of my favorite writers ever and now she's an artist and I'm consumed with jealousy and I want to hate her but she makes it impossible, so I'll just have to be obsessed with her instead. So should you.

As Other Birds by [livejournal.com profile] crowroad3 - I knew this had to be Crowroad's work as soon as I read it, thanks to her gorgeous, inimitable style. Poetry and Winchesters and witches and magic... bliss!

Rae's Diner by [livejournal.com profile] marietwist - Art and fic and daaaaaammmmmnnn.

What Lies Beneath by [livejournal.com profile] madebyme_x - Another beautiful fic that hits me right in the heart and why do the people I love keep hurting me so???

Coffeehouse ft.. Alternate Universe by [livejournal.com profile] indiachick - Any combination of indiachick's and themegalosaurus's brains has to be amazing, and this is.

Long Before We Fall by [livejournal.com profile] finchandsparrow - Someone new to LJ who I'm now stalking because I hope we get more like this!

A Hiatus by [livejournal.com profile] themegalosaurus - A lovely curtain fic that needs to have a new chapter every week, because I don't ever want it to stop.

And finally, Message in a Bottle by [livejournal.com profile] tifaching - Okay, I've already recced this once, but I had to add it to this list because I love it, and not just because it was written for me. ;-)

Thanks again to the mods for organizing this challenge!

Get your head out of the gutter. I'm talking fics. I don't post enough recs, and I'm trying to remedy that. So, here we go: four nice long fics to fill your free time while we wait for the S13 premiere.

It's Friday, and we don't have a new episode of Supernatural to talk about, so how about a couple of recs?

I don't post recs very often. I'm really, really bad at it, in fact. And when I do, I feel guilty, because there are dozens of great works I could be talking about right now. So I'm trying to do better.

First is All Your Lovers, which the amazing [livejournal.com profile] crowroad3 posted on my birthday (which still makes me hyperventilate a bit because I'm not worthy.) Like all of crowroad3's works, it's a gorgeous, lyrical, visionary-swirly-magical thing. And it's Trials!Sam, y'all. I could not possibly ask for more. None of us could.

And second is The Paper Asks Nothing, by [livejournal.com profile] ameliacareful (who doesn't seem to be updating her LJ any longer, so this is on AO3). This is about as different from Crowroad3's story as you can get. I'm trying to think of how to describe it and I keep coming up with words like spare and calm, which don't sound right and also don't sound flattering. The thing is, she has written some absolute gut-churning horror with a quiet, pared-down style which just makes it that much more horrifying.

And finally, how about some absolutely fantastic smut (not just smut but also sweetness and angst and yes there is smut-aplenty) by [livejournal.com profile] z_publicizes featuring Sam and a human version of the Impala?

If one of these fics doesn't make your day, I don't know what will.

caranfindel: (Default)
One of you wonderful people wrote some Sam/Rowena smut. It took place in S10 but I don't know if it was written during S10 or later. I do know it involved Sam having Rowena in chains in the Brewery of Doom. I forgot to bookmark it and it's killing me. It was written by someone I follow and hopefully someone who follows me as well. If anyone remembers this fic, please give a shout!

Found in the comments, thanks to the ever lovely [livejournal.com profile] frozen_delight!

Woo hoo!

There's some great 11.02 fic and meta out there, and more coming, I hope! I expressed a wish specifically for codas/tags showing the boys getting back together, and so far the universe has given me these. And they are stupendous.

Lament for Death by [livejournal.com profile] crowroad3 on AO3.

I'm sure there are more out there, so please pimp yourself or somebody else in the comments!

And I also wrote one of my own... spoilers for 11.02, obviously.

Because [livejournal.com profile] spnopera is coming!

Stories and art will be posted beginning tomorrow, and so many of my favorite writers and artists are on the list... this is going to be awesome!

I had a couple of conversations about the royal baby this weekend, and it was SO HARD not to say "And she was born on Sam Winchester's birthday!!!" My Tumblr and LJ have been full of Sam Winchester, for obvious reasons. I haven't had a chance to look at much of it but some time in the next couple of days I'm going to sit down and scroll until my eyes bleed. And it will be marvelous.

I'm way, way behind on LJ but I've managed to read a few things. I keep saying I'm not a slash fan (and I keep saying "I keep saying I'm not a slash fan") but over the past few days I've read three truly marvelous slashy fics that I can't not recommend, probably because they're from three of the best writers out there - less than 3333 by [livejournal.com profile] kalliel, Come Sail Away by [livejournal.com profile] indiachick, and Goodbye Stranger by [livejournal.com profile] frozen_delight. If you're like me and you shy away from "slashy slash" (as [livejournal.com profile] frozen_delight so aptly put it) but you like beautiful thinky lyrical writing that just might happen to have some subtle sexytimes or unrequited feeeeels, you must read these.

And for those in Other Fandoms, May the fourth be with you. But since everything comes back to Supernatural...

caranfindel: (Default)
Since [livejournal.com profile] themegalosaurus hasn't posted this to her LJ, go read it on her Tumblr. Just do it. A nicely chilling look at some of Sam and Dean's interactions in last night's episode. Spoilers for 10.15.

ETA... On her LJ now, go show her some love!

caranfindel: (Default)
Just some thoughts I had after rewatching, and reading other peoples' posts...

I'm STILL their bitch )

No spoilers in the comments, please! :-)

Whether you loved or hated 10.11, you will appreciate this fascinating spin on it by [livejournal.com profile] frozen_delight. Two words: hive mind. It's fantastic. And it has bees.

Happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] duckondebut, though it's probably already well past her birthday where she is. If you're not reading her, you really really should. Here's a good place to start. You like Supernatural? You like Mystery Science Theater? You like funny? You like tragic? Then you'll like 9.02 with commentary from Sam and Hallucifer. Trust me.
caranfindel: (Default)
To wish a very happy birthday to my friend [livejournal.com profile] agelade and to not feel guilty at all that I'm nagging HER to give ME a gift. Because what I'm looking for is the next episode of Lustraverse, and people, that is a gift to all of us. If you haven't read any of it, go check it out now. Adorable and chilling preseries fic, compelling case fic, an entirely awesome, entirely AU season 9. Do yourself a favor and visit [livejournal.com profile] lustraverse!
