Ah, tentacle Gods, talking dogs and haunted Wi-Fi, these are a few of my least favorite things.

I did love one, ONE, thing about this episode: Dean dejectedly putting the gun on the table and saying Ketch can have whatever he wants. It was so well-acted, and in character. Dean could shoot Ketch, who have already delivered Gabriel, but he wouldn't do it.

I always love these polls, thanks for the chuckles! 'Why was Dean puzzled about the boring old MoL keeping a prisoner, considering that there's an actual dungeon in the bunker?' and 'Seriously, why didn't either of them call Cas?' - both very good points, hee hee!

I was annoyed with Dean deciding to leave Sam behind at first, but on second viewing I realised that if Sam had gone with Dean, that would have left poor battered and bruised Gabriel to the tender mercies of Ketch - and I wouldn't trust him to look after a sickly wasp - and I hate wasps! I know this wasn't mentioned but I think it was implied, and Gabriel did seem to trust Sam to care for him.

Hehe, this was an especially awesome poll ('The only vegetable I associate with Sam is eggplant!' ;)

i think the major thing that bothered me was the lack of calling Cas. I mean he's been there too; twice, actually! So why can't he be the back up plan, or the back up plan for the back up plan. It just doesn't make sense to me, but then I just hate the idea of the boys being separated. Period. Something bad is going to happen.

Davy Perez, you failed me. This trainwreck was straight out of the Bucklemming School of Script Writing.

Ok, I'll give you that /maybe/ the Capitulum used to have a normal door but someone concreted it up to keep meddling kids from accidentally freeing Mrs. Cthulu. But why would they leave the manhole accessible? Why not just seal that sucker up for good?

Grandpa Whoever had PTSD after WW1 and decided he wanted a new god to wipe this place clean and start over. Did none of the other MoL try to tell him he was nuts? Did they all say "Yeah! Cthulu 1928! And the Kraken for VP!" Why did they pick Cthulu rather than Ganesh (who seemed pretty chill when we met him) or Osirus or someone who speaks the language and doesn't eat people?

Was feeding some random chick to the monster the first time they opened the rift? Did they send a diplomatic corps over to negotiate surrendering the planet first? "We are prepared to offer the Treasure of Solomon." "Nah, bro, just get me a blonde in a skimpy dress."

Were all these people in the red robes related? Because Diner Dude with the knife said his family kept an eye on the monster. Apparently they breed well in captivity.

After 30+ years of hunting, when you find a person who is 115 years old chained up in an underground bunker and doesn't look a day over 22, do you really expect me to believe that the Winchesters of all people don't have sense enough to realize she's probably chained up for a reason?

I joked about Mary finding the boys a new dad in AU land before the season started but I swear to Chuck if we're setting up some kind of Ketch/Mary/Bobby love triangle my tv will meet the same end as the one last week.

(Speaking of which, why did Dean smash it? I saw screws. Isn't there a screwdriver somewhere in the Bunker or in the trunk of the Impala, or you know, the hardware store in town?)

We've established that there are multiple AU lands to open the portal to. How do Sam and Dean know they're opening the right one? What if they had opened Cthulu Land or Evil Twin Kaia Land again?

Shouldn't we be checking the other Capitula to see what they have chained in their dungeons?

Isn't leaving Sam alone with the guy who killed his brother over 100 times, gave him genital herpes and not in the fun way, and turned him into a car just asking for trouble?

If they didn't call Cas to tell him Dean was going to AU Land and almost starred in tentacle porn, shouldn't they have at least called him to tell him that they have Gabriel?

Are we ever going to find out why Ketch (aka Jimmy Wayne, I call him Jimmy Wayne because of the Mississippi accent) has a Mississippi accent?

Weak connection to the movie 'The Thing'

I forgot to complain about this, but yes! I mean, tentacle monster, sure, but that's it? If you're gonna rip off a title from a horror classic why not borrow more than that...

I think Sandy didn't eat the boys right off the bat because after being down there so long, she clearly didn't know how long exactly she'd been down there, she doesn't know anything about the world above, she's totally new to this entire planet... I think she was smart enough to think that maybe they could serve as a sort of temporary guide to her in all things earth, until she could go it alone and THEN she'd eat Sam and breed with Dean. :P

Re: Ketch/redemption, I tend to think that he's going to either die, or get left behind in the Apocalypse world, in the process of helping to rescue Mary. She is the one and only person we've ever seen him give a crap about, and Asmodeus saying all that stuff about how he'll NEVER have redemption - I think that will be his redemption. We'll see. :P

I do think that Dean's choice to leave Sam behind makes SOME sense, honestly. Because the Wayward Sisters had to come rescue them last time, so it makes sense to have someone back home to come after him if necessary. Don't know why they wouldn't call Cas, though, if only for Gabriel's sake. Wouldn't Cas know the most about how to help Gabriel at this point? Cas staying behind to help Gabriel and organize a rescue if necessary makes the most sense.

I do hope this means maybe we'll see a little Sam/Gabriel comfort in the next ep or two, though. ;)

If Sam is so worried about his cholesterol, shouldn't he just have eaten the bun and the celery? I know that shrimp is high in cholesterol; isnt lobster as well?

Also, what god have I offended that I have to live in the middle of the fucking country where there is no such thing as a lobster roll? Or if I did have to live here, why did I have to come from the northeast where I know from lobster rolls? It's so unfair.

I liked the episode overall. At least there was plenty of Sam and Dean. All the pretty. I do hate Ketch though and want him to die as quickly as possible. And I never want to see Asmodeus again. Also, I miss my cute little Nougat.

I think Dean's real reason for having Sam stay behind is that he's being protective of his brother. But I do love him saying that he doesn't care if Ketch dies.

> Things I did not like about this episode

Missed opportunity for the rusting car outside the chapter to turn out to be the Impala in a much more interesting plot where she and the guys got transported back to the 20s rather than Sandy!tentacle-god living to the present.

Two minor things, coming in way late because I just now got my husband to binge the back episodes-

Supernatural's MotW episodes this season have definitely gone back to riffing off of horror movies, but despite the title, this one wasn't really riffing off The Thing - it was much more closely pulling inspiration from The Void, which is a much more recent Lovecraftian film set in a hospital that has people trapped inside it and be-robed cultists standing outside it looking all scary at various points, as well as a gate to eldritch horror and evil things inside people.

Also, I bought Dean's choosing Ketch over Sam for one big reason that wasn't on the list - I think it was an excuse because he's scared he's going to lose Sam like he lost Mary (and Jack) and is trying to protect him, and willing to lie through his teeth with a plausible-ish reason to get Sam to go along with it.
