I'm pretty sure that by that time, she had been told she was on her way out/ she decided to leave. Gamble has since said she was burnt out and left, but there were other things going on behind the scenes that factored into her decision.
Jensen, at least, did make fun of the giving back of the coat scene. Frankly, he had already stated that KEEPING the darned coat was an acting choice on his part and not in the script. I think Gamble had very few effs left to give, so she decided to let Jensen's acting choice come back and play out in a way Jensen didn't care for.
I'm weird, I liked Gamble's seasons. I think season six works really well in retrospect once you know Sam doesn't have his soul. Season 7 is a mess, but she didn't have the budget to so what she wanted with the storyline and Singer had gotten a lot of input, so I don't know how it would have shaped up if she had been in complete control. Certainly now she has had two hits (The Magicians and You) and is doing well in that regard. So whatever her weaknesses she has overcome them.
