I think it could have worked if it have been from the point of view that Sam and Dean had made Castiel understand what it was to be FAMILY, and his greatest joy after all his millieu of watching and not interacting with man, was now being in the right place to be able to sacrifice himself to save his family, his brothers in arms. I think there could have been a lot of very earnest emotions there.
I wish they would have gone this way.
Instead of being moved by Cas' speech in order to feel bad when the Empty got him, when he said he realized he couldn't have what he wanted and was crying my mind stopped watching the episode and started thinking about fandom instead: "Are they going to kiss? Wow, the Destielers are going to be over the moon! Gee, they tried to write that speech to be interpreted either way, but the Destielers are going to claim they won..." and so I didn't feel anything when the Empty snatched him instead of being all broken up.
I felt the worst when Donna disappeared.
And Dean, ANSWER YOUR PHONE! Sam needs to know you're still here!!!
