I loved this episode. I'm torn between hoping that Lucifer is lying and Sam IS still hearing God (because that would be a plot twist I totally wouldn't expect at this juncture) and basking in the delicious Sam angst of his never-ending quest to be worthy in heaven's eyes. Jared nailed the acting here, looking so brave and terrified and determined to do the right thing.
God is just a dick really - he's interfered twice that we know of, sticking the brothers on a plane when Lucifer appeared and resurrecting Castiel, but never again, no matter how dire the situation. Inconsistent reinforcement is the worst parenting technique out there, making kids keep trying again and again to get the long-for positive result, and Sam's a perfect example of this, so hoping he's worth redemption in the eyes of heaven that he'll believe even though his instincts had to be screaming at him.
I love what this says about Sam's character, though. Above anything else, he is a man of faith in others. He believed in Dean not saying yes when Castiel lost faith, believed in Castiel when Dean lost faith even though Castiel had broken his wall, believed in Dean again as a demon no matter what he did or said to him.... and still believed in God even after he was tortured in the cage and everything that followed. The only one he ever loses faith in is himself.
This episode did confirm that Dean never told Sam about the connection to Amara, but if I needed proof that she's somehow controlling Dean supernaturally, him ignoring Sam's phone call when he knows what's happening is all the proof I needed. I think he didn't want the angels to kill her because she said the souls of all those people were inside her... or maybe he just didn't want all the angels to die? Not that I think he actually gives a damn about angels.
I'm looking forward to seeing whether Michael comes into this. It's obvious the cage Lucifer talked to Sam in isn't the actual cage (suspended in space with chains and vastly different bars), and the spell was intended to specifically draw down Lucifer. We know the writers haven't forgotten Adam thanks to 10x05, so Michael and Adam are presumably still there and waiting... and where Lucifer doesn't give much of a damn, I wonder if Michael might. We know Sam can host angels besides Lucifer, so maybe...?
