On further review: More thoughts about 14.04, "Mint Condition"

Yeah, I know, I should be giving you an episode poll. I'm working on it. (Although, the number of poll voters has gone down every week since 14.01, and I don't know if that's lack of interest in the show or lack of interest in the poll.) But I'm distracted by a couple of thoughts...



1. percysowner came up with the perfect rationale for Sam's ridiculous and unbelievable story about why he hates Halloween:

As to Sam's prosaic reason for not liking Halloween, I can hand wave that it isn't the real reason. I think it is that Halloween was a terrible time of year for him, but right now, he's trying to make sure Dean won't go back to moping in his room. Saying Dad would get drunk around that time of year (although I do think that is fanon not canon) and Dean and Dad were always sad would just throw Dean back into angsting. But coming up with an cute "laugh at Sam" memory lets Dean still feel good. So the "laugh at Sam" memory it is.

Headcanon accepted!

B. I know the title "Mint Condition" refers to the collectible toys, Panthro in particular. But Panthro was also hiding a dark secret, wasn't he? A power lurking inside him, controlling him, turning him into a destructive force. Hmmmm. Who else is supposedly in mint condition right now? Who else just showed up out of nowhere, supposedly as good as new?



DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THE BATMAN KEYCHAIN, BECAUSE WE ALL KNOW WHO IS BATMAN ON THIS SHOW, DON'T WE?

FWIW I haven't been taking the polls because I haven't been watching the eps (this is the first one of the season I actually watched! ^^;) but I've still been enjoying reading them -- I like to see the random selection of opinions, plus your questions are always hilarious, so! ^^

I have major doubts the ep writer was thinking of any symbolism but I love the deep reading into it, so! accepted!

A slight thing that bothered me about the ep was Den geeking out over Thundercats when it was Sam who was in love with Thundercats. or am I remembering that wrong?

I'm sorry, but we just didn't need an explanation for why Sam hates Halloween. No one needs it, not even new viewers. "Our whole lives are Halloween" is a perfectly adequate explanation. Why wouldn't Sam be uncomfortable with kids walking around dressed as the monsters they hunt? What really needs explaining is why Dean isn't?

It's a perfect headcannon explanation. I'm pretty sure the drunk thing is from fandom not canon, but it could certainly be true. I think we all know why Sam hates Halloween; and now after Jess too, I'm sure he hates it even more.
