How do you know? Maybe he did keep them. For reasons. For later. For parts of show that aren't on Show.

Also, here's the thing with Sam and the hunters dying and whether or not he's a bad leader and the things Castiel was saying. Those hunters didn't die because Sam was a bad leader. But that is 100% what Sam thinks. It's how he feels. And Castiel knows how that feels because he's been both a bad leader and a decent leader who's had everything go to shit in the past despite his best intentions. So what he said to Sam while they were not-fighting on the floor of the diner felt like it was the right thing to say in the moment.

Also, leadership qualities aside, Sam was their leader, so he was responsible for them, and now they're all dead, so. We all know Sam well enough to know how that will feel to him regardless of circumstances.

"Cas keeps trying to tell us how much Jack loves and respects Dean, but it's pretty forced, and it's obvious he considers Sam his primary dad" - but Jack opted to leave on a road trip with Dean when he was dying, and has always looked up to and copied Dean, so I think he does love/respect/admire him. I think Cas and Sam are co-dads and Dean is cool uncle!

And I really don't want our precious Cinnamon boy Jack to be the big bad, or be even slightly bad, I'm hoping it's the Empty and played by the same wonderfuly twitchy actress as before!

Little piece of nougat Jack cannot be the Big Bad. Except he probably will. Sigh...

One thing I don't like about SPN is that they don't go all the way with shitty feelings for more than a short time. Remember Dean talking to Sam about hell, and wishing he couldn't feel any more? That was harrowing and awful. These days, it seems like there's a limit to how much you can delve into shitty feelings and stay with them. Partly because they drop things like Soulless (and then we're cringingly grateful when it's actually brought up). I still choke up sometimes when the brothers cry. But I haven't been left a sobbing wreck since Samdreel killed Kevin.

Their reactions have become pretty rote.

It feels to me that they're setting up Jack as being a big bad, but I really hope it's red herring. Maybe another big bad will show up, and then they won't be sure if Jack really is on their side.

This was probably the second-Sassiest episode of Supernatural ever. You did miss my favorite Sastiel moment-- when Sam was on top of Cas, panting, during and especially after their fight, and Cas was gazing into his eyes trying to find the real Sam there... <3

Let's not forget that the Empty is out there, or that Nick is still in play. Michael's demise was way too convenient, and he could well be lying doggo, awaiting his chance to infect either of the above questionable characters. There are a whole bunch of ways the big bad could go.

Of course, given the standard of writing in this season, and especially in this episode, it's just as likely to be stupid as it is to be innovative and brilliant. *sigh*

I agree with the other folks who said that it's not about Sam being a bad leader but Sam feeling like he failed his followers, and that it felt like the right thing at the time.

I really loved this episode except for one thing: Jack sending the snake to heaven to be with his owner. Who is a monster. And would end up in Purgatory. Do snakes go to Purgatory, Jack? No, I don't think they do. Way to go, jerk.
