The last time Sam was this close to the guy, he was tied to a chair, injured and helpless. Cole threatened Sam, tortured him, tried to make him sacrifice the brother he was trying so hard to save.
But there’s a case. People are dying. Sam realized long ago that he’s no more important than those other people. It’s more important to save their lives than it is for Sam to be comfortable. Or safe. Or happy. Or alive. He looks to Dean for confirmation, and gets it.
Cole says he can get important information, and Sam’s had stranger bedfellows.

Special bonus drabble! Because there was something I wanted to happen, and it didn't...
Dean heard one punch over the phone, and Sam’s not talking about the rest, but he can read between the lines. He knows what “he was looking for you” really means. He knows what Cole did to his brother.
(He knows he could have stopped him, but he didn’t. And he owes Sam for that.)
And pulling someone back from the brink, only to inflict more pain, is a taste Dean acquired long ago.
So when Cole’s resuscitated again and finally gasps “stop,” Dean smiles coldly and says “we’re not finished.” And administers the shock one more time, for Sam.

But the second one was oh, so satisfying. Alastair's prize pupil!Dean, demon!Dean, MoC!Dean, and Badass Big Brother!Dean all coming together in a perfect storm of "Shouldn't have messed with Sammy, bro." WANT.
This is now my headcanon. I have a grudging respect -- even admiration -- for Cole, but nobody messes with Sammy. NO-body. Dean totally should've taken a chunk out of Cole for that.

But yes I did kinda the second one to happen. Or at the very least to have Dean say, "No one gets to call him Sammy but me."
