Part of my continuing goal of writing a 100 word drabble for each episode – here’s the one for 10.18, Book of the Damned.

This is different, he thinks, as he throws the decoy Book into the flames. I didn’t want be saved. Dean does. It’s not the same thing.

This is different, he thinks, as he reveals the Book to Rowena. My dying would have been for a good cause. Dean dying, or living with the Mark, or becoming a demon, it won’t save anyone. It’s not the same thing.

I can’t do this alone, he thinks, as Rowena smirks and discusses her terms.

Dean will probably never understand why saving Sam was wrong, but now Sam understands why it was also right.

It IS different. Very much so. At least in my head. But this comparison was certainly interesting and thought-provoking.

I agree that it's very different. But I think Sam's realization of how far he's willing to go to save his brother might help him understand why Dean did what he did.

Interesting. I think it's different too, but ultimately it comes down to neither of the being able to live without the other, so in that sense it's the same.

I'd like to think Sam does know why Dean saved him (and he did get it right when he said Dean did it for himself - at least partly), but I think Sam doesn't believe he's worthy of that kind of saving. But then, neither of them believe that.

Great piece. Very thought provoking.

Ohhh, this is wonderful!! I really liked how you had Sam explore this further because yes, I can see his argument and how it is different, but I can't help but fear if Dean will see it that way *gulp*

I love the idea of a role reveal, with Sam saving Dean this time. But it would be nice to see it explored differently somehow, maybe with them reaching a mutual understanding of some sorts, or just some kind of character growth. But yeah, I'm more than ready for some fiercely dark!Sam who will do anything to save his brother *rubs hands in evil glee!*

Yike...you and I obviously had a lot of the same thoughts about this ep. I swear I didn't read this before I wrote mine! The ways in which their sacrifices for each other and the lengths they'll go to for each other are both the same and different is so interesting to examine. :)
