Just when you were starting to doubt that this is a great time to be alive, it looks like we might be getting that Wayward Daughters spinoff after all. (Although a different site said it would be called Wayward Sisters? Pfft. You're missing the point, guys.)

They are literally so adorable I cannot stand it.

And this made me think. J2 have talked about sticking with Supernatural for "at least 300 episodes," which sounds like the 300th ep could be some kind of endpoint in their minds. And if I remember right, they'll hit this milestone in season 14? Does that sound right? (Yeah, I know, I could do the math myself, but I'm not going to.)

Anyway. Not that I want the guys to leave, but they have kids and lives and they're not going to want to split their time between Austin and Vancouver forever. But what if this is a way for them to ease out of a full-time show without leaving us altogether? What if Sam and Dean semi-retire from hunting and become advisors, Bobby Singer-style, to the Wayward Daughters? What if they just show up on a few episodes a year?

Or, even better, what if they show up on every episode, just in one brief scene? What if every episode includes a call to or from the Winchesters? The Js could film it in Austin, so they'd never have to go back to Canada. They'd only need a tiny crew. Jensen could direct. Jared could do his own hair. It'd be perfect.

I have an entire tag on Tumblr called 'please let jared style sam's hair." It is a good tag.

In fact, what if some episodes start with the boys calling the girls about a case, like Charlie's Angels? And Dean would be all, "Angels, we heard about a bunch of exsanguinations in Des Moines" and Sam would roll his eyes but would also be not-quite-so-secretly amused and Dean would get a kick out of himself. I like it.

Hello angels; this is Dean.

And furthermore, what if this phone call always shows the guys in a close-up, and when they end the call, the camera pulls back and you see that they're up to something crazy or interesting or just plain sexy in their retirement? Like shirtless deep-sea fishing or yoga (in tank tops) or rock climbing (in shorts) or getting hot stone massages (wearing nothing but tiny towels) or walking the red carpet (in tuxedos) or oh! Imagine them saying "good luck, ladies" and they hang up and the camera pulls back, way back, and it's sunset and they're on the rim of the Grand Canyon?!

Yeah, I need this.

(here's another interesting story about the spinoff.)

I used to listen to the news on NPR every morning while getting ready, but I haven't been able to stomach the news since the election, so I'm listening to podcasts instead. I have a slew of non-fiction favorites (mostly NPR shows like Wait Wait Don't Tell Me, This American Life, etc.) but right I'm really into fiction. I've been a fan of Welcome to Night Vale for years, and I love the other podcasts by the same group (Alice Isn't Dead and Within the Wires, but not the Orbiting Human Circus, which I tried and disliked), and I'm looking for more weird serial fiction. Some others I've enjoyed are Limetown and The Black Tapes.

Now, here's a story that shows how everything comes back to Supernatural in the end. The Black Tapes is a serial podcast following a fictional journalist who's working with a paranormal skeptic (a James Randi type) to investigate a series of paranormal/supernatural events. I'm midway through season 2 and so far it has featured: "chosen" children, a wife who has been taken, drawings of pentagrams surrounded by concentric circles and weird symbols, demons (including one whose name is pronounced differently but would probably be spelled Azazel), possession and exorcisms, ghosts, arcane texts, you name it. Even a female character named Charlie. So every episode ends up pinging my Supernatural radar in one way or another. And I've been thinking that a crossover would be fun. Like, since The Black Tapes takes place in the Pacific Northwest, what if the journalist keeps running into the Supernatural crew on location and doesn't understand that they're taping a TV show? And she points out a pentacle surrounded by concentric circles and they tell her "yeah, Jerry paints those, he does a great job?" And someone sends her mysterious VHS tapes with grainy images of exorcisms, but they're just copies of Supernatural episodes?

Anyway. The episode I listened to this morning had the protagonists heading to Vancouver, which of course grabbed my attention, because look! My little crossover dreams are coming true! And then they said they were going to Riverview Hospital! Could it get any better? But they ruined it by explaining that Riverside is a vacant hospital that's used as a setting for movies and TV shows, and listed several of them, including Supernatural. A shout-out that would normally fill me with glee, but this time it made me sad, because it means the journalist is aware of the show and my fantasies/plot bunnies about her accidentally stumbling onto the set have been Kripked. Oh well.

The point of all this is that I'm looking for more, similar podcasts, and since you obviously have excellent taste, I'm hoping you have some suggestions! (No podcasts of SPN fanfiction, please.)

(Also, now I'm dying to hear a phone call between this journalist and Sam Winchester, with Sam awkwardly trying to keep her away from a dangerous situation without giving anything away... I wonder if there is any kind of audience for such a crossover?)

I never even watched Gilmore Girls. But I'm aware of it, for reasons that should be obvious.

So very obvious, these reasons.

Potential reboot spoilers ahead.

I listened to Pandora for maybe 30 minutes this morning, and heard these things:

"Spirit in the Sky," which was used in 5.02, "Good God Y'all."

"Dust in the Wind," which Dean quoted in "Appointment in Samara."

"Wish You Were Here," which hasn't been used on the show but will always be a Sam & Dean song to me.

A commercial for Jared Jewelers. ;)

In my never-ending battle to avoid spoilers, I don't read the descriptions U-verse (my television provider) gives each episode. Turns out that's not really a problem sometimes. These are actual U-verse descriptions:

Mom had a very complicated way of committing suicide. I wonder how she got herself on the ceiling?

Hey, look, I'm doing that weekly post thingie again. What's happening this week?

I'm supposed to be posting a pic-heavy review of last night's Supernatural episode today, but since that's STILL NOT HAPPENING (stupid hiatus) I think I'll follow the lead of some of my flisties and try to make a weekly post anyway.

What's going on?

Well, that was exciting! I'm sure next week's post will be infinitely better, and with fewer things to say "dammit" about. And if not, at least there will be pretty pics. :-D

(Oh God, I hope I didn't just jinx myself.)

Everyone's doing these awesome year in review posts, and I'm just. Ugh. Fail. :-) So instead, here are my fandom resolutions for 2016...

Continue to write a review of every episode, with purty screencaps. So far, so good.

Continue to post a poll after every episode, and a few extras just for fun. Again, so far, so good.

Write episode tags when I'm inspired. Last year, I wrote one for every episode, and it was hard to come up with an idea sometimes. Also, since I was sticking to what actually happened on the show, and not what I wanted to happen, they sometimes turned into that kind of fanfic that I don't even like - the kind that's just a character going over things in their head, but nothing new happens. So now, I'm only writing tags when I'm inspired to actually write something: unnamed drabble (11.01), unnamed drabble (11.02), Burning Out His Fuse Up Here Alone (11.02), We've Got Tonight (11.04), and Fall On Your Knees (Oh Hear The Angel Voices) (11.09).

Fill in at least two more squares on my Spnspiration Bingo Card. I've been working on this for a little over a year and I'll never fill all the squares, but maybe I'll get a Bingo someday.

Write a case fic. This one's pretty close to being done, and I can't decide if I want to save it for a Big Bang, or just post it on its own.

Summergen, maybe? I don't know. This one's pretty intimidating. I had fun writing to prompts in the Oh Sam Triple Play Challenge, but I got to choose the prompts myself. Being assigned a prompt is way different.

Put all of my writing on AO3. Well, not all of it. Some of it should just quietly go away. ;-)

Well, there's only a couple of days left until the Hellatus is over. How are we feeling?

How you doing? )

As I sit down to write this, there are 8 hours until I hear Carry On Wayward Son and I'm kind of distracted.

completely unspoiled speculation ahead! )

I had a couple of conversations about the royal baby this weekend, and it was SO HARD not to say "And she was born on Sam Winchester's birthday!!!" My Tumblr and LJ have been full of Sam Winchester, for obvious reasons. I haven't had a chance to look at much of it but some time in the next couple of days I'm going to sit down and scroll until my eyes bleed. And it will be marvelous.

I'm way, way behind on LJ but I've managed to read a few things. I keep saying I'm not a slash fan (and I keep saying "I keep saying I'm not a slash fan") but over the past few days I've read three truly marvelous slashy fics that I can't not recommend, probably because they're from three of the best writers out there - less than 3333 by [livejournal.com profile] kalliel, Come Sail Away by [livejournal.com profile] indiachick, and Goodbye Stranger by [livejournal.com profile] frozen_delight. If you're like me and you shy away from "slashy slash" (as [livejournal.com profile] frozen_delight so aptly put it) but you like beautiful thinky lyrical writing that just might happen to have some subtle sexytimes or unrequited feeeeels, you must read these.

And for those in Other Fandoms, May the fourth be with you. But since everything comes back to Supernatural...

caranfindel: (Default)
In which I complain about many things, some of which are SPN-related but none of which are actual complaining about SPN or contain spoilers for any part of S10.

(The title is from "Save Yourself" by Breaking Westward because yes, not only am I stealing song lyrics for fic titles, but for general journal entry titles as well, because I'm JUST THAT UNINSPIRED.)

1. I think they need to add a new diagnosis to the DSM. I think I'm clinically annoyed. Kind of like being clinically depressed, but instead of depression, it's this free-floating annoyance at everyone and everything and it never really goes away. (Or could it just be that I'm surrounded by annoying people and things? No, it's probably me.)

2. I need to get up ridiculously early tomorrow and therefore I really should go to bed ridiculously early tonight rather than watching Supernatural and maybe someday that will happen but TODAY IS NOT THAT DAY. And it would mean I'd have to stay offline tomorrow to remain unspoiled and I'm not prepared to do that, because tomorrow is going to be a long and boring day and I'll need some internet to keep me sane.

3. I got spoiled for this week's episode of Better Call Saul; come on Yahoo, can't you make your stupid headlines just a tiny bit vague? Also, OH MY GOD, BETTER CALL SAUL. How can I watch a show where a younger brother is trying to emulate his older brother without reading Sam and Dean into it and then JESUS CHRIST. MY HEART. (My policy on spoilers applies to Better Call Saul as well, so if you want to discuss it in the comments, please pretend you haven't seen the preview for next week's episode.)

What, that wasn't whiny enough for you? You want more? Then go ahead and click. )

It's hard to believe 2014 was my first full calendar year in the SPN fandom. You've all made it a ridiculously fun experience.

Thanks to all of you who have participated in my sometimes ridiculous polls, and read/commented on my fic and reviews. And thanks for sharing your own reviews and fic and art and meta and everything. Being able to talk, and laugh, and complain, and speculate, and fangirl with you guys... I can't adequately explain what it means to me.

I don't make resolutions, but I do have some things I hope to accomplish in 2015.

1. Continue to have a poll for each episode of S10.
2. Continue to write a drabble for each episode of S10.
3. Fill out a row on my SPNspiration bingo card.
4. Finish the sequel to my version of what happened after 9.23 before it, too, is completely Kripke'd.
5. Participate in another Big Bang.
6. Maybe participate in Summergen? I don't know. This one scares me.

Anyway. I've got work to do. Happy new year, y'all!
caranfindel: (Default)
Yes, friends, I am in sin and error pining today, for my sins are many and egregious.
Things done and left undone )

So, what's my penance?

(BTW, if you don't recognize the title, it's from "O Holy Night," which is the Christmas carol I'm obsessively listening to this week.

O holy night, the stars are brightly shining
It is the night of our dear savior's birth
Long lay the world in sin and error pining
Till he appeared and a soul felt its worth

Two very different, but both completely amazing versions, are by:

Straight No Chaser

and Weezer

Four things. Spoilers for 10.02 but they're also spoiler tagged inside so you can go ahead and click through if you haven't seen that one yet.

Strategically calibrating expectations )

Oh, wait, I have a number five, but it's not even remotely SPN-related. I'm wearing black pants and navy trouser socks. And I noticed before I left the house and said "oh, fuck it" and left anyway. I don't know why I feel like you need to know that. And who am I to make fun of Hannah's weird short pants, when I deliberately leave the house like this? (Boom. There you go. It's SPN-related now. Because everything is.)

10.02 Poll

Hoo boy. Have you recovered enough to take the poll?

Reminder - no spoilers in the comments, please, including the promo for 10.03.
You don't know what I've done. I might have it coming. )
