Something to add to the "things to love" list: THE ANGELIC MINNESOTAN STATION WAGON. I would have given anything to have an honest-to-god station wagon/Impala showdown, ahahaha. I love angel transportation. Regarding their carpool choices (or lack thereof), I guess the fact that they all showed up in cars is a step up from The Angel Who Tried To Reach The Winchesters By Hopping on a Tractor. (Though I'll also note that Tractor Angel actually fucking SHOWED UP. IT WORKED. THE TRACTOR WORKED.) XDDD
Why didn't the angels arrange their carpool a little better? - hee hee hee!
What's the point of angel-warding sigils if angels can just burn them off? - I thought this was cool, and I assumed it was a new trick they'd learned to channel their power.
Also, Dean pointing the gun at Kaia really bothered me on my first view, then on the second one I realised it was in character - Dean's feeling guilty for not believing his mom's alive and desperate, too. Neither Jack nor Sam believed Dean would harm Kaia, which is why they didn't react. And I don't think she really believed he was, she just knew she'd pushed his buttons.
And more flippantly - Dean pulled the gun on her because he's as sick to death of cocky, smug, know-it-all teen girls as we are!
I agree about the angels learning new tricks. They've been on earth for a while and the Winchesters keep banishing them, so they finally decided to figure out how to fight back.
If so, it would be cool if Sam and Dean commented on it, like "How are they doing that? When did they learn how to do that?" I like characters changing and growing. I don't like it when it feels more like convenient retconning because we need a character to have (or lose) an ability suddenly after 13 seasons just because someone writes themselves into a corner.
Yes, I agree that if Sam and Dean had commented on the angels new ability it would have been better. I think I fill the gaps left by the writers - and give perhaps them too much credit!
Here's the dumb thing about back door pilots: when (if) the show actually airs, potential new viewers will have missed the origin story of the show and (in this case) half its characters, so they'll have to be given in exposition or flashback which is far less exciting and not likely to impress new viewers, plus it'll just bore potential hand-me-down viewers from SPN who've seen it all already, all of which decreases the chances of anyone watching the new show beyond its first episode.
Besides, fans hate them. They hate the way the plot and characters intrude on the original show and time that should be devoted to its own plot and characters, especially when the plot of the pilot is poorly integrated with the original show or (as is looking likely from the way this episode ended) has nothing whatever to do with it. The consequence is that fans react poorly to the pilot making it impossible to sell to the network.
They should just give their new show ideas their own free standing pilot aimed squarely at the PYT market they're clearly looking for (which, don't they appreciate, is not the audience they have for this show?) and let it stand or fall on its own merit. Bloodlines might actually have flown if they'd done that since it was probably no worse than most bubble-gum shows on TV and its only real crime was that they tried to introduce it to the wrong audience and, here they are again, making the same mistakes with Wayward Sisters.
And it's all so unnecessary. Jody and Donna already have fans. Claire and Alex have fans. Lots of people would watch the show for them, and other characters like Patience and Kaia could be added organically.
I have no good faith belief that Jody and Donna will have any real part in the new show. They're just bait to con SPN fans into rooting for it.
Here's the thing: when you talk about spin offs, you think of a character or characters from one show getting a new show of their own, but that's not what's happening here. What happened with Bloodlines, and what appears to be happening again with Wayward Sisters, is that they're attempting to pass off a wholly new show as a spin off.
What they should have done was given Misha his own show, years ago. His following would have guaranteed its success, and it would have solved the current writers dilemma about what to do with Castiel.
Or they could have kept Cas the way he was in S4-5, someone who occasionally showed up to help but wasn't 100% Team Winchester and certainly not their deus ex machina who had to be hobbled for plot reasons, and then they wouldn't have to come up with ways to deal with him.
Here's the thing: when you talk about spin offs, you think of a character or characters from one show getting a new show of their own, but that's not what's happening here.
How is that not what's happening here? Jody has been a character for seven seasons, and her relationships with Donna, Claire and Alex have grown organically over several years.
Sioux Falls as a location has been a part of the show for almost its entire run.
Like I said, I have no good faith belief that they're going to have any significant part in this new show. Particularly not Jody and Donna. I bet you pound to a penny they never have more than occasional guest appearances, just as they do on SPN.
Funny, I'm 100% sure Claire is the one who is going to be in it sporadically. The actress' movie career is really taking off and there's no way she'll want to be tied down by a TV show.
I agree with that, too. The feeling I get from the appearances of Patience so far is that the new show's mainly going to be about her, and now they've introduced another new character and it hasn't even started yet. Once it's up and running, I'm not expecting any of the SPN characters to play more than a subsidiary role. The CW favours shows about young people. It targets the teenage market. It's not going to do that with a show about middle-aged women. Jodi and Donna (and even Alex and Claire) are just being used as a hook to get SPN viewers to support a pilot for what is, in reality, an entirely new show.
No idea, but that reminds me... why didn't either of them call Not!Cas to tell him they found Jack?
That is a very good question! (I didn't think of that either, but wow guys...I am starting to feel sorry for Castiel here, he is so forgotten...)
A shipyard in Nebraska?
I had the same question but the sister said it looked like a river port to her (I don't know if there actually is one along their route, but it's not totally impossible?)
Will Sam and Dean end up in single layers in The Bad Place, or maybe even (gasp) torn t-shirts?
Oh MY I don't know if I could take such a licentious display! *fans self while collapsing artfully on her Victorian fainting couch*
Also, one more unanswered question that I keep forgetting to raise -- early in the ep Dean and Sam talk about possibly having to kill Jack if he's gone dark-side. But they don't mention that they don't actually know how to do this? He doesn't get hurt by angel blades, and that's even if you can get close to him, with his psychic powers?
Hehe, these polls always make me giggle!!! I did appreciate that these Angels at least felt more threatening than usual - if we have to have them on Show, I want badass angels (and demons) back!!!
Why couldn't it have been purgatory!! I would much rather see the return of Benny than all of these whiny teenage girls. Am I the only one who does not care about the spin off and hates that they are taking up time we could be looking at Sam doing research or Dean cleaning guns or either of them doing just about anything.
