This isn't the most watchable episode poll - I think we need to digest a while before we're ready for that - but there are so many other questions to ask!
Overall I liked this season, but wasn't quite sure what to check. Mostly my opinion is "uneven"-- some fantastic, stand-out-great episodes and some epically terrible ones, along with a few meh or pretty good ones. I actually thought seasons 6 and 7 were better, but 10 was better than 9 and WAY better than 8.
The finale... what I checked made it sound like I liked it less than I did. There were some great moments, but overall as a season finale it was disappointing. One issue you touched on in your poll was that there wasn't a clear demarcation between Dean most of the season, Dean when he was getting taken over by the MoC, and Dean when he went off the deep end and was going to kill Sam. Did he really plan to? Why was he so cold before, during, and even AFTER the Mark was gone? Did he really not have anything to say to Sam? Did he even FEEL different? Even Demon!Dean wasn't as bad as MoC dean, but only MoC Dean *sometimes*... there just was no character consistency.
And when is Sam EVER going to get any credit for... anything? No one seems to care, including Dean, that he was willing to die AGAIN for the good of the world. It seems like everyone's only ever mad at him for his choices, no matter what they are. And nothing is ever explained about them, on his side or from canon's perspective, or Dean's, or anything... he has no character consistency either.
I had a lot of unanswered questions about this season, but overall it's a "LOL continuity" issue at this point. I'm not very interested in The Darkness-- there are ways to make it interesting, but I doubt they will. I guess I'm sad that it doesn't feel like the show is going to go in a direction I'm interested in, ever. There's too much obsession with raising the stakes. I've said this a lot elsewhere, but they can't keep doing that; how much higher can the stakes get? Once you've gone death and apocalypse for EVERYONE multiple times, don't you think there's a ceiling? I want them to *lower* the stakes-- obviously there will still be death and mayhem and heroics, but maybe simplify a bit, look toward a different possible future for the boys?
Yeah, I think they end to step back from the apocalyptic plots. They've gone as far as they can. And I really hope, at some point in S11, that someone acknowledges Sam was willing to die for DEAN'S mistake.
"And when is Sam EVER going to get any credit for... anything? No one seems to care, including Dean, that he was willing to die AGAIN for the good of the world. It seems like everyone's only ever mad at him for his choices, no matter what they are. On the music, I will add Gambler - Bobby in Heaven. :) I really enjoyed some of the episodes in the middle- we had a string of really strong episodes and some great stand alone eppies. I am still a bit confused/disappointed by the finale but it is growing on me- I did love the boys moments in it. :)
Wasn't Kate a werewolf? Favorite new one-shot character: Tina from about a boy.
Can't remember where I heard this, a tweet or the woman of letters podcast for the Australian con may be, anyway Jensen said the MOC influenced everything Dean did this season. Which is very interesting.
Your thoughts on the season in general: Loved the one offs. The main mytharcs were boring and poorly planed. I was searching for something completely different and came across this: https://screenwritingfromiowa.wordpress.com/2008/03/10/screenwriting-by-numbers-tip-4/
Seems the writers could use a refresher on how not to suck. 1 Protagonist/ 1 Antagonist (2 protagonists for SPN) and The Law of 3 would be a good start. Seriously Three Subplots or Less. With all the different sub plots (Sam and Dean, Metatron, Crowley, Rowena, Cas, the Stines, Charlie, Claire, etc) the show becomes a muddled mess.
What is up with Cas? If he has his grace back, why doesn't he use it to save Charlie? Or teleport places before Dean can drive there? Or fight back against being beaten to the ground by Dean?
Cas was able to heal Charlie's bullet wound and carpal tunnel syndrome, but he didn't seem to have enough juice to bring anyone back to life. Even though Gadreel was able to bring both Cas and Charlie back to life in his wounded/weak state.
> Why could Metatron zap out of the library, when no angels can zap anywhere?
The angels can't zap? I must have missed this point. When did this happen and why? All I've seen is Cas not zapping where he obviously should have done and been completely confused and frustrated by it. Are angels also unable to communicate mentally (through prayer, whatever) any more? When did that happen and why?
No angels have zapped anywhere since the fall. Even in S9 they drove everywhere - remember Tractor Angel, and Gadreel getting off the bus? And Hannah drove too.
Yes, but that was before the angels returned to heaven. Earlier this season I thought I recalled Hannah questioning why she and Cas were driving his car instead of zapping, and him explaining that he didn't feel up to it because the borrowed grace was failing, but now he's got his grace back so . . . ?
Maybe I'm misremembering. If that's the explanation: that retaking heaven didn't restore the angels' powers, then the writers haven't sinned as much as I thought this season.
Worst thing Sam did: FAIL to kill Crowley. I mean what? No backup plan? Not that I'm bummed. I kinda love the big C.
Also, seriously, TFW, Claire gets to keep the humongous angel (Gregori?) sword? Give her a regular one. There's loads of those kicking around.
It's hinted at upthread but I'd like to know, how come Cas's wings are burned up when he was human during the Fall? (My guess for why Metatron could still zap. No Fall = no burned up wings. Right? Right?!?)
Question (that may be answered next season) how the heck did a witch, a mere mortal, suddenly become more powerful than BOTH and Angel of the Lord and the King of Hell? I mean really? What next, Rowena takes on The Darkness and wins? Maybe God will appear and she will be stronger than he is. And if she had all this power, why the heck was she running from the Grand Coven? Or did they have more power than angels and the King of Hell? If so, how did the MOL kill them and steal their magic? Does that mean the MOL are actually the most powerful beings in the Supernatural universe?
You can tell that Rowena, suddenly overpowering both Crowley and Cas bugged the heck out of me.
Overall i liked this season and i feel that it is one of the strongest out of seasons 6-10, way way better than seasons 9 and 7, and better than season 8 (although the season 8 finale was much better but the season 10 finale is growing on me).
I still want so much more Sam pov, and i want Dean's pov on some of the stuff he said and did this season.
I'm curious about the darkness, as it could be really interesting but i am just going to wait and see.
My main unanswered question for this season (and well at the end of season 9) is what has happened to Crowley's son Gavin (i think that his name lol) as in season 9 he was transported from the past to present, which should completely alter the time-line like Bobby getting out of the demon deal in episode 6.04 'Weekend at Bobby's. It just seems that the show has completely forgotten about it (Unless i missed something that explained it at the end of season 9 as i haven't watched that season in a while).
Everyone with the name Bobby Singer and variations were there. Made sense to me. Look up Bobby Singer on Facebook, for example. "The Bobbys are surly" was one of my favorite lines.
Can I nominate 'writhing and moaning in the throes of a nightmare' Dean for favourite looks? Because I'd like to.
Also beating the crap out of/threatening to kill Cas for Dean's, ah, already-long list of sins this season...
I really enjoyed the season overall, but the few bad episodes were really bad. I'm with septembers_coda on the whole raising the stakes thing, though. I feel like the Darkness has to potential to be interesting, and to be used in ways that let the drama come from the characters rather than Nebulous Apocalyptic Threat #37, so I'm letting myself be excited about it until I'm disappointed. But also I'd like them to just hunt some monsters and work their shit out for a bit. (I'd also like some more Dean & Cas interaction, and that's not just the shipper in me talking. I missed their friendship, fraught and baggage-laden as it is, this season.)
Music-wise, FINALLY A WHO SONG!! I have been WAITING for a Who song on this show FOREVER (and it's not as if Pete has a problem with selling his tunes because look at commercials and all the CSI shows) because come on--Who Are You, Won't Get Fooled Again, The Seeker, etc. SO apply at times to this show. Anyway. *disgrunted Who Fan Mode off*
"Involved Lester in a demon deal" I still can't bring myself to feel any regret; Lester was SUCH a scumbag and SO deserved what he got (even though that's still Radek Zelenka to me so it was such an oddly painful moment).
I always fail in your polls and end up ticking most of the boxes, I just can't help myself #epicfail
I think looking back, I've been surprised about the amount of solid episode this season, especially when they come in a string. I think a few single episodes dipped, but for me I don't think the beginning, middle or end really took a drive. A successful season for me, I think.
My favorite thing about the results of this poll is that no one really cared about any bad choices Sam might have made this season. We're all just pissed he doesn't sleep naked. :)
